Patriot Guard and Associates; We are Honored to have been asked to participate in the return of the Cremains of PVT JEWETT WILLIAMS, CIVIL WAR VETERAN CO “H” 20TH MAINE INFANTRY REGIMENT to his home state of Maine for burial.
PVT Williams served from October 1864 through mustering out of the regiment in July 1865. During PVT Williams time, he and his regiment serving under their former Commander Joshua L. Chamberlain took part in the formal surrender of General Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.
Shortly after the Civil War, Williams moved to Michigan, Washington State, and finally Oregon. Williams passed away in 1922 at the Oregon State Hospital. They remained there unclaimed for 94 years until the Maine Adjutant General took legal guardianship of Williams.
