Honor Mission
James Wilbur Head
Phoenix, Arizona – 01-18-20

James Head was a United States Marine Corps Veteran. He served from 21 June 1943 to 23 March 1946. Jim quit high school to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. Like many of the Greatest Generation, the calling to serve his Country was strong. He attended boot camp at Paris Island in August of 1943. He was promoted to PFC at Camp Lejeune. He attended Bakers School and was promoted to Corporal. He was sent to Camp Pendleton and then sailed to Guam but the island was secured and went to Hawaii, attached to the 5th Division.Jim trained extensively for the island hopping campaign taking place in the Pacific and sailed to Iwo Jima following that training. Making the beach landing 2 days following the initial assault. Jim landed with the 28th Marines and was assigned to the 5th Service Battalion. He worked to evacuate the KIA and Wounded and also assisted in patrols.Contracting malaria after weeks of the island campaign, Jim spend several weeks in the hospital and after Iwo Jima was secured and the surrender of Japan, he was assigned to the occupation forces in Japan.Jim was discharged in 1946
