Honor Mission
James Terry Schwertfager, Retired
USA, ANG – Vietnam
Glendale, Arizona – 04-14-21


James Terry Schwertfager is a United States Army Veteran. Jim entered active duty on April 26, 1968. Jim served 10 yrs., 2 months, and 21 days, including 3 yrs. and 15 days of foreign service in Vietnam. Jim’s MOS’s (Military Occupation Specialty) were 57H40 – Cargo Checker, Terminal Operations Specialist, and 76R40 – Weapons Material Supply Specialist. Jim served in the United States Army Europe with the 579th Ordnance Company. On April 21, 1976, Jim was discharged, having attained the rank of Sergeant. Jim re-enlisted on Jan. 1, 1980, with the Army National Guard. Jim served an additional 9 yrs., 9 months, and 17 days. Jim’s MOS’s (Military Occupation Specialty) were 76Z – Senior Supply Service Sergeant, and 76Y – Unit Supply Specialist. On Oct. 31, 1989, Jim was honorably discharged and retired from the United States Army, having attained the rank of Master Sergeant, Pay Grade E8. Jim’s last duty assignment was with Detachment 1, Headquarters STARC, Phoenix, AZ. During his service to our country, Jim received the following: Army Commendation Medal (2); Army Achievement Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal (2); National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal; NCO Professional Development Ribbon (3); Vietnam Campaign Medal w/device; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/palm; Vietnam Cross of Gallantry; Overseas Service Bar (4).During his time in Vietnam Jim was repeatedly exposed to Agent Orange, which led to him being 100% VA disabled. Jim ultimately succumbed to an illness suffered as a result of this exposure. It is our honor to stand in silent reverence as we show respect and gratitude to this hero for his sacrifices made for this nation.

Although all prior statewide mandates have been lifted at staging locations, all members must still adhere to the following:· All members are required to carry a face mask/cloth covering at all times during the mission. There are still partners (funeral homes, cemeteries, churches) that require masks to be worn. Some families may also request masks/face coverings be worn. There are no exceptions.· If you feel ill or have a temperature, please stay home until you improve.· If, in the past week, you have tested positive for COVID-19, or you have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the past week, immediately notify the State Captain or an Assistant State Captain. · Social distancing is recommended, but not required unless cemetery, funeral home, other partner require it, or if a family requests it.· Wash your hands before, during (as practical), and after the mission.· Water will be provided by the flag support person and passed out only by that person. No snacks will be provided by flag support and members should not bring any to share either.
