During his 28 year career he served as Platoon Leader – 4/325th AIR\, 82d Airborne Division\, Platoon Leader – 1/75th Ranger Regiment\, Company Commander – 1st Armored Division\, Asst Prof Military Science – US Army Cadet Command\, G3 Chief of Operations – 2d Infantry Division\, Battalion S3\, XO – 1st Space Brigade\, Army Space Command\, Special Asst to the Commander – US Strategic Command\, Executive Officer – US Strategic Command\, Chief of Space and Special Technical Operations – 3rd Infantry Division\, G33 Chief of Operations – USASMDC/ARSTRAT\, Brigade Commander – 1st Space Brigade\, and Division Chief: Space\, ISR\, Cyber\, EW – Headquarters\, Department of the Army.\nJames was awarded the Legion of Merit\, Distinguished Service Medal\, Bronze Star\, Defense Meritorious Service Medal\, Meritorious Service Medal (4th award)\, Army Commendation Medal (3rd award)\, Army Achievement Medal (4th award)\, Joint Meritorious Unit Award (2nd award)\, Meritorious Unit Commendation\, National Defense Service Medal (2nd award)\, Southwest Asia Service Medal w/2 Bronze Stars\, GWOT Service Medal\, Korea Defense Service Medal\, Iraq Campaign Medal w/star\, Army Service Ribbon\, Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd award)\, and more.
