James “Lurch” Dietrich Joyner , Retired

ABOUT THE MISSION:
We will stand a flag line to honor Capt. James “Lurch” Joyner and his service to our country. Capt. Joyner had a 30-year career as a United States Naval Officer. Capt. Joyner applied for flight school and reported to Pensacola, Florida in 1963. Following flight school in 1965, he reported to VA-42, the A-6 replacement Squadron at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach, Va. He made multiple deployments with multiple squadrons (including VA-196, VA-42, VA-176 and VA-35) and concluded his career with various staff and ship assignments to include command of VA-35 ( The Black Panthers ) and the USS Kalamazoo (AOR-6) he finished up his career as Commodore of Logistics Squadron-2 at the Naval Weapons Station in Earl, New Jersey. He spent many years after his retirement volunteering for several service organizations. He also led the Hampton Roads Squadron of the Association of Naval Aviation for 16 years. Capt. Joyner was also one of our honorees at last years Air Show, celebrating 75 years of Naval Aviation at NAS Oceana.

Short Transit to Base Chapel. Please note that PPE is required while on Base. No Weapons allowed on Base. ID’s will be checked at the Staging Location. After the service, we will provide a short escort for the family to the reception (on base). Any questions please direct to the listed Ride Captains.

Water WILL NOT be provided, please bring your own.
