DESCRIPTION:James H. “Jim” Cannon – 91\nUS Marine Corps WWII Veteran\nJackson\, Mississippi\nFriday 8 Jul 2016\n\n\n\nThe State of Mississippi has lost another WW II Hero\, US Marine Corps WW II Veteran James H. “Jim” Cannon has passed away\, the PATRIOT GUARD RIDERS have been requested to help honor and pay tribute to him for his service to our country. \nMr. Cannon enlisted in the US Marine Corps on 6 March 1943. After boot camp he went through paratrooper training and was assigned to the 3rd Parachute Battalion on Bouganville Island. He was then returned stateside and assigned to G Company\, 3rd Battalion\, 28th Marine Regiment\, Fifth Marine Division. After further training at Camp Tarawa\, HI\, the Fifth Division invaded Iwo Jima on 19 February 1945\, Jim was wounded within 10 minutes of the invasion. He was evacuated and after treatment for his wounds was discharged 23 August 1945\, having received the Purple Heart for his injuries. \nAlthough he was in the Marine Corps for only two years and five months\, his service as a Marine and particularly his participation in the battle at Iwo Jima was the defining time in his life. He was active in the Marine Corps League and attended reunions of the Marine Paratroopers\, the Fifth Marine Division and the Iwo Jima survivors as long as he was able\, the last in 2013. \nAfter his honorable discharge he attended Mississippi State University where he earned his degree in Chemical Engineering in 1950. \nPRIMARY STAGING:\nFriday 8 July 2016 at 9:30 AM at \nLAKEWOOD MEMORIAL PARK\n6000 Clinton Blvd.\nJackson\, MS 39209 \nThe PGR will provide a silent US Flag line for the graveside service with military honors provided by the Marine Corps League Honor Guard. \nNOTE:  There will be no escort with this Mission\, please join with us as we STAND FOR ONE WHO STOOD FOR US ! \nRC Randy Oswalt\n601.506.3956
