James Garland Freeman, Sr., Retired

First Sergeant James Freeman of Jacksonville, NC passed away April 19, 2021 at the age of 97. James was born in Pulaski, VA and grew up in a coal mining community in West Virginia. He was the youngest of six children, all deceased. His greatest devotion was to his family and United States Marine Corps. He was a Hardcore Warrior serving World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Jim enlisted in the Marines in 1941 and served honorably for twenty three years. During his career, he also served as head of the Marine Corps Security Guard Company for President Dwight D. Eisenhower and President John F. Kennedy while stationed at Marine Corps barracks 8th and 1. As part of the Marine Corps rifle team, he often took first place at the National Rifle and Pistol matches; later, he went on to coach winning teams in the Corps. James was married to his wife for 56 years, now deceased and blessed with one son. After retirement, service to his community was close to his heart. He served the community as previous Disabled American Veteran commander, 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner. He was blessed with his second wife who is also deceased. James is survived by his son, grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
