SP4 Turpin enlisted in the United States Army in 1970 and immediately served a tour in Vietnam where he received the National Defense Service medal\, the Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. He then transferred to the US Army Reserve.\n\nHe was a master carpenter with Charles Slay Construction and was a member of Diamond Hill Baptist Church.
