Howard served in the US Coast Guard from 14 May 1943 to 21 September 1945. He was Honorably Discharged at the rate of Ships Cook 3rd Class (E4). He earned the American Area Campaign Medal\, the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal w/1 bronze service star.
