Howard C. Snell Sr. served in the United States Army for twenty years and five months. He spent four and half years in Vietnam with the Special Forces Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LLRP). After being wounded for the third time and receiving his third Purple Heart, he was told he could not go back into the field, so he retired. During his time in service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; the Vietnam Service Medal; the Combat Infantryman Badge; three Purple Hearts; the Bronze Star Medal; the Army Commendation Medal-w/3 OLC; Overseas Service Bars-5; the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm; the NCO Professional Development Ribbon-Numeral 3; the Good Conduct Medal-6; the Army Service Ribbon; the Overseas Service Ribbon; the Army Achievement Medal w/4 OLC; and the Expert Marksmanship Badge (M-16).
