His service included 6 years of overseas assignments including several years in the Vietnam War. He rose to the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant (E-9) and earned 2 National Defense Service Medals\, Certificate of Commendation\, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal\, Navy Commendation Medal\, Meritorious Unit Commendation (twice)\, Humanitarian Service Medal\, Good Conduct Medal (10 times)\, Vietnam Service Meal (3 times)\, Presidential Unit Citation\, Combat Action Ribbon\, Navy Unit Commendation\, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal\, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross)\, Overseas Service Ribbon\, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon\, Letter of Appreciation and Meritorious Service Medal.
