He graduated from Bogata High School in 1949. He played varsity football\, basketball\, & baseball. Gerald also boxed in the Golden Gloves and was a Champion in his weight division in Sulphur Springs\, TX. He served in the United States Marine Corps 1949-1952\, including the Korean War. He became a sergeant in the Anti-Tank Assault Squad of I Company (a rifle company)\, 5th Marine Regiment\, 1st Marine Division.
