Gerald served in the US Army from 10 April 1968 to 10 January 1970 as a Light Weapons Infantryman. He was Honorably Discharged at the rank of Specialist 4th Class (E4). He earned the National Defense Service Medal\, a Bronze Star\, an Army Commendation Medal\, 2 Overseas Service Bars\, the Vietnam Service Medal\, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Palm\, the Combat Infantry Badge\, the Marksman M-14 Badge\, the Marksman M-60 Badge and the Expert M-16 Badge.
