ABOUT THE MISSION:

GM3rd Class Thornton proudly and honorably served in the Navy during the Pacific Campaign as a crewmember aboard the USS Pensacola CA24 Heavy Cruiser. The USS Pensacola was nicknamed Grey Ghost by Tokyo Rose. He was in the battles at Guadalcanal, Leyte Gulf, Tassafaronga Bay, Midway, Iwo Jima and Tarawa. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1981. Medals include WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal w/4 Stars, American Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal.

Following the service PGR will accompany GM3rd Class Thornton to his final duty station at New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, 12023 New Zion Rd, Crystal Springs. PGR will stand a silent U.S. flag line for graveside service with military honors. Masks required.
