  2. On Saturday July 14, five members of the Patriot Guard joined me to celebrate the life of Eugene (Gene) A. Smith. It was a warm and cloudy day when we set our flag line. As family and friends started to arrive, the sun became more visible.
The love shown for Gene by all of the family and friends was very emotional for all, including the members of the Patriot Guard. As we stood to show honor and respect to Gene, many of the family stopped by to say “Thank You” for what we were doing for their husband and father. We tried to explain, that it is us who are thankful for the privilege of standing to honor such a wonderful gentleman.
We presented the dog tags and the plaque in front of a small group of family, and they were very thankful for them. We gave our condolences to the family and said our goodbyes.
The family asked me to tell all Patriot Guard Riders, that they were very thankful for our showing honor to Gene. Rest in peace sir.

On Monday July 16, I stood for Gene as the family bid their final farewells to him. Again it was a warm sunny day, and one of the sons said his father was very happy now.
We all paid our last respects to Gene. The family thanked me again for all we had done, and I told them “that it truly was an honor.”
