ABOUT THE MISSION:
Family members of S1c Ernest Ray West and a mourning nation have waited 77 years to lay their beloved Hero to his final rest. He was among the first casualties of WWII while serving aboard the USS Oklahoma BB-37. The Battleship Oklahoma suffered catastrophic damage from hostile enemy aircraft attacks. Torpedo’s sank the ship while moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor. S1c West served in the U.S. Navy from August 6, 1940 to December 7, 1941. Medals and awards include: Purple Heart – Combat Action Ribbon – American Defense Service Medal W/Fleet Clasp – Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal W/Bronze Star – WWII Victory Medal. 429 crew members, including 415 Sailors and 14 Marines perished during the attack. S1c West was identified through efforts of the DPAA USS Oklahoma Project.
