Ernest Andrus, Veteran
USN – WWII
Biloxi, Mississippi – 01-09-20
ABOUT THE MISSION:
Greeting & Flag line for US Navy WW11 Veteran Ernest Andrus (96). This mission will be a flag line at the parking lot on the south side of highway 90 near the Biloxi Lighthouse. We will greet Mr. Ernest Andrus as he is running across the country at the age of 96 to raise funds to take a special WW11 ship back to Normandy for a D-Day memorial. He will be arriving at the Biloxi Lighthouse at approximately 9-9:30 am where he will end his run for that day. Here is a little of his story: Mr Ernest Andrus is a World War II Navy Veteran. This feat of running across the country at age 96 is being undertaken to raise money for the LST 325 Ship Memorial. The LST 325 is a World War II era ship used to land equipment and troops on hostile shores. Mr Andrus was one of the crew that brought the ship back from the Isle of Crete, Greece to the U.S. in 2000/2001, as aired on the History Channel (The Return of LST 325). One thousand fifty one LST’s were built during World War II. The 325 is the only one left that is restored and operational. His dream is to take the ship back to Normandy for a D-Day Memorial. Mr. Andrus feels it is important to have an LST in the U.S., to show this generation and future generations what it took to win the war, Ernie and a group of his shipmates went overseas to get possession of it. After months of hard work and red tape, they accomplished the impossible and sailed the ship back to the United States on its own power. He left San Diego, California on October 7, 2013 at the age of 90 and ran & walked each day until he reached the Atlantic Ocean, Saint Simons Island, Georgia on August 20, 2016. (one day after his 93rd birthday). He is 96 now and is running the same course in reverse and started March 16, 2019. Come join us to cheer on this amazing WW11 Veteran as he passes through on his journey and quest to preserve a small piece of WW11 history.
