Honor Mission
Elmer E. Drefahl, KIA
USMC , WWII
Milwaukee, Wisconsin – 06-17-21 & 06-19-21

ABOUT THE MISSION:

Elmer Drefahl was born December 5, 1919, to Hilda and Edwin Drefahl. He attended a Christian Day School and Rufus King High School. After high school he joined the Wisconsin National Guard for several years. In 1940, after receiving several positive letters of reference he enlisted in the Marines. He was sent to San Diego for basic training and was assigned to the USS Oklahoma. He spent several months patrolling the Pacific and ended up in Oahu, Hawaii, spending one year doing patrols and maneuvers in Oahu. On December 7th, 1941, two days after Elmer’s 22nd birthday, the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft. The USS Oklahoma sustained multiple torpedo hits, which caused it to quickly capsize. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 429 crewmen, including Drefahl. From December 1941 to June 1944, Navy personnel recovered the remains of the deceased crew, which were subsequently interred in the Halawa and Nu’uanu Cemeteries. Corporal Drefahl’s personnel profile can be viewed at: Profile
This week we will bring Corporal Elmer E. Drefahl home, where he will be buried next to his parents on Saturday, June 19th, 2021.
