Don served in the US Navy from 6 September 1950 to 16 August 1954 as an Electronics Technician (Radar) 1st Class (E6) on the USS Essex (CVA-9). He earned the Korean Service Medal\, the United Nations Service Medal\, The National Defense Service Medal\, the China Service Medal\, a Good Conduct Medal\, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation Medal.
