Commissioning of the USNS Hershel “Woody” Williams, Veteran

ABOUT THE MISSION:

The Patriot Guard has been invited by Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation to participate in the commissioning ceremony of the new USNS Hershel “Woody” Williams (T-ESB-4).  The ship bears the namesake of the only surviving WWII USMC Medal of Honor Recipient from the Battle of Iwo Jima, then-Corporal Hershel “Woody” Williams, whose actions while assigned to the 21st Marines, 3rd Marine Division on February 23, 1945, earned him the nation’s highest honor in October 1945. Woody’s foundation is responsible for erecting permanent Gold Star Family Memorial Monuments across America.

Special Instructions:

Staging Time: 8:30 am (Be on time to get an Events Badge)
Briefing: 8:45 am
Set Flag Line: 9:15 am
Ceremony Begins: 10:00 am (Approx. 45 minutes long)
Expected Mission Duration: 3 Hours
Parking:  Parking garage is on corner of W Plume St. and Boush St. – Directly cross the street from the USS Wisconsin.
Weather: Chilly! 47 Degrees, partly cloudy and windy conditions expected. We will be outside for the flag line and ceremony so please dress appropriately!
Security:  NO WEAPONS of any kind.  There will be checkpoints.
Instructions:  We will meet inside the 2nd floor entrance of the Half Moone between 8:15 – 8:30 am for our briefing.  Event badges will be issued to gain access to the ship.  At 9:00 we will proceed to the ship’s deck to form our flag line.  We will set a flag line (gauntlet-style) from the gangway deck entrance to the left of the stage to receive guests and dignitaries.  Once all are aboard, we will stow flags and sit as guests for the duration.
Flags & Water:
Flags will be provided
Large Bike Flags will NOT be needed.
Water WILL NOT be provided, please bring your own.
