Honor Mission
Clyde Stephenson, Veteran
Appleton, Wisconsin – 02-12-20

Clyde Stephenson, Appleton, passed away on February 6, 2020 at the age of 99. He was born in Wauwatosa Wisconsin on May 28, 1920. Clyde joined the Marine Corps in January 1940, and after boot camp and additional training, was assigned to the battleship USS California. On December 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked the Pacific Fleet, the ship was damaged and the California slowly filled with water over the following three days and eventually sank. She was raised in April 1942, repaired and heavily rebuilt, and returned to service in January 1944. Clyde was training fellow marines in automatic weapons at the rifle range the morning the Japanese attacked. As Japanese aircraft flew directly over their heads, he and his fellow marines have been credited with shooting down four enemy aircraft during the battle.
