ABOUT THE MISSION:
a little history…….
Christopher Moon, an Arizona Native was born in Tucson 3 August 1989. As early as 10 years of age many people in the sports community said that Chris showed much promise as an athlete. He was known for his love of his family, a great personality, easy to get along with and his patriotism for this great nation we live in. Chris attended Tucson Magnet High School and continued to show his talent on the field in football and baseball. His coaches remembered him as always wanting to be involved with the guys and be a part of the team.
Upon graduation in 2007 from Tucson High, his talent got him a full scholarship with the University of Arizona’s baseball team where his coach described him as ” a talented pitcher and outfielder and one who could have contributed to a team that was ranked number one in the nation.” Chris was also at this time drafted by the Atlanta Braves.
Chris felt a higher calling to serve his country and in 2008 he walked away from a full scholarship with the U of A and a promising career in professional baseball.
SPC Moon joined the United States Army in February of 2008 and attended basic combat training and Airborne School at Fort Benning graduating at the top of his Army training class. After completion of training he was assigned to Fort Bragg and joined the 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. SPC Moon deployed with this unit to Afghanistan in September of 2009.
On 6 July 2010, SPC Moon was injured when insurgents attacked his unit with IEDs while conducting a combat patrol in Arghandab River Valley, Afghanistan.
SPC Moon lost his battle to injuries that he sustained on 13 July 2010 supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. SPC Moon was the 12th Navajo Nation Soldier to pay the ultimate sacrifice in the middle east since 11 September 2001.
He leaves behind his parents, his sister, his niece, many family members and many friends along with the community of Tucson.
The Patriot Guard Riders were at that time asked to come and stand in honor and respect for the ultimate sacrifice SPC Moon and his family gave as we were honored to do so.
Now the family has once again asked us to come and stand a flag line. This time to honor a memorial in SPC Moons honor and it will our privilege to be there.
Please come with flags mounted if you have the ability to do so.
