Vernon was born on April 14\, 1933 in Prairie Home\, Mo. to Waldemar and Louise Lenger (Stock). Following graduation from Prairie Home High School in 1951\, he was drafted into the United States Army where he served for one year in Korea achieving the rank of Corporal with decorated service.
