Bob Thomas was an Aircraft Refueler, both air and ground, and was a boom operator on KC97’s. He received his Sgt stripes from General Curtis LeMay personally at Fairchild AFB. Gen LeMay told him to fuel his aircraft and Bob refused, telling the General he would not as long as the General was smoking his cigar. The General then left, Bob fueled the aircraft and was summoned to the control room (thinking he was in for a court martial for insubordination). Instead he was commended for following procedures even when told to forgo them and given his Sgt stripes. During his service (which included tours in Korea and Vietnam), Bob received the Good Conduct Medal with 4 braids (USAAC), Good conduct USAF two oak leaf, Purple Heart and Presidential Unit Citation with one Oak Leaf. Bob was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and considered a true American hero. Bob is survived by his wife, son and daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren and their spouses. Bob’s family has asked the PGR to have a flag line in honor of his service to his country at Prescott National Cemetery on September 9 at 10 AM.
