Benjamin C. HamburgHARDIN – Benjamin Carl Hamburg, 89, of Hardin, passed away March 30, 2009, in the Billings St. Vincent Hospital.
He was born March 28, 1920, in Gering, Neb., one of 17 children born to Conrad and Margarite Hamburg. He grew up and received his education in Nebraska. He worked in the beet fields and as a painter with his father before World War II.
Ben entered the U.S. Army in 1941 and began his military history, joining six of his brothers in the armed forces. His family was designated as America’s number one service family with 11 brothers serving in the military. He served as a Tec 4 in the Third Armored Division. Ben and two of his brothers received the Bronze Star for Valor. He and three of his brothers also received Purple Heart medals. Ben was a part of the invasion force at Omaha Beach and was in battles at Normandy, France and Belgium, the Battle of the Bulge and Germany. He received his honorable discharge in 1945..
