EOM-28 April 19- American Hero’s Memorial Service/Roll Call, Lawton/Ft. Sill Veterans Center, Lawton, OK.
On a sunny Sunday afternoon 9 patriots on four bikes/trikes and two cadges gathered at the Lawton/Ft. Sill Veterans Center. They were there to honor the lives and service of the veterans at the center who had passed in the last quarter.
After our briefing we flagged the front entrance of the Center with 21 American flags and placed all 5 service flags on the island in front of the main entrance.
After the flags were in place we gathered in the hallway outside of the auditorium where we were joined by the Centers two Chaplin’s, the guest speaker. Chaplin Mike gave us a briefing on how the program would proceed and when we would be needed to stand in for those veterans with no family in attendance, they would be honoring a total of 23 veterans today.
As the program started the group walked into the auditorium and as the rest of the group continued to the front, the riders turned to line the back wall. After opening remakes by the Chaplin’s the Roll Call began. As each name was read a bell tolled and the family (if present) came to the back of the room to receive a red carnation and proceed to the front of the room and place the carnation in a vase and received a gift from the center. If no family was in attendance one of our group would take the carnation to the front. place it in the vase. step back and render a salute before returning to the back of the room.
After all the names were read the guest speaker who was the assistant director of the Center spoke to the audience of how important each of these veterans was to the staff here and how much they were loved and would be missed. He thanked the families for coming and recognized “these patriots at the back of the room – the Patriot Guard Riders” and thank us for coming to these Roll Calls and standing in for those Veterans with no family present. We had the honor of standing in for 13 of the 23 veterans remembered today.
In closing I want to thank the patriots who gave of their time to help honor these veterans today, the staff of the Center for their hard work in caring for these men and women who have served our great nation but mostly our thanks must go the these 23 who gave so much of their lives to serve US.
Respectfully
Billy (5 Dollar) Hope
