American Hero’s Memorial Service/Roll Call Comment

  1. EOM-26 Jan 2020 – American Hero’s Memorial Service/Roll Call, Lawton/Ft. Sill Veterans Center, Lawton, OK.

Ten Patriot Guard Riders arrived at the Lawton/Fort Sill Veterans Center to help honor the twelve veterans who had passed at the Center in the last three months.

American Flags were posted along the sidewalk in both directions from the front doors and the five Service Flags were posted on the island in the front drive and were bordered by American Flags. The PGR members then manned the front doors as family and guest arrived for the Roll Call.

Chaplin Mike from the Center had come out before we staked flags to express his appreciation for the Patriot Guard Riders and our long history of support for this event. He also asked that we gather outside the auditorium ten minutes before the start of the program for a quick briefing and prayer.

As the program began we lined the back wall of the auditorium. As the Veterans’ name was read – if no family members stood up – a PGR member would “stand in” for the family. He/she would step forward, take a rose from the hostess, walk to the front of the auditorium and as the Centers staff and guest speaker saluted the PGR member would place the rose in a glass vase on the table, step back, render a salute (or hand over the heart) and return to the end of the line.

It was an honor for us to stand in for ten of the twelve veterans honored today who had no family present.
I want to thank all the PGR members who came out today, the staff of the Lawton/Fort Sill Veterans Center for the great love and care they show our veterans.

But today the main focus of our collective thanks goes to these 12 Veterans. Stand down and rest, your missions here are complete.

    Billy (5 Dollar) Hope
