Below is the invitation from the Director of Black Hills, Fort Meade & Hot Springs National Cemeteries, Sara J. Elton. I am including the entire message because it is very informative as to what the Unaccompanied Veterans’ Memorial ceremony is and how we can be a part of honoring and showing respect for these veterans.

We will probably never know anything more about their lives, except that they are American Veterans and at some time they served in the United States Military, so once again we can stand for those who have stood for us.

Please stage at the Windmill Truck Stop at 8:00 am Monday January 3rd for briefing, leaving at 8:30 am for BHNC. Ride Captain will be Curt Eisenbraun and flags will be provided. The Windmill is located at I-90 Exit 55, at Deadwood Ave. Curt can be reached at caeisenbraun@rap.midco.net or 605-721-9301.

Dear Friends of Black Hills National Cemetery:

We will be having our quarterly Unaccompanied Veterans’ Memorial ceremony here at Black Hills National Cemetery on Monday, January 3rd at 0900hrs.

The Unaccompanied Veterans’ Memorial ceremony is a brief military committal of any veteran interred at Black Hills National Cemetery who arrived unaccompanied and was inurned or interred directly and without military committal per the family’s request.

Our staff, and anyone else in attendance from the community, will meet at our committal shelter at the top of the hill for a brief memorial service to begin promptly at 0900.

Staff members and others will read aloud the name, rank, branch of service and home town of each decedent. We cannot tell you how many names will be read as we have not completed interments for December. Our period of interment of unaccompanied veteran remains covers October, November and December in 2010 and will probably consist of about 10 or so names.

After each name is read aloud, three rifle volleys will be provided along with the rendering of “Taps” by a local volunteer honor guard. January’s UVM ceremony will be honored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1273. The flag will be presented to a member of the audience.

It is our mission and our duty to provide a military committal to our veterans. Please join us in recognizing their honorable service and sacrifice at one of South Dakota’s three National Shrines.

Please feel free to forward this message to anyone who may be interested. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me or my staff any time at (605) 347-3830.

In Veterans’ service,

Sara J. Elton
Director
Black Hills, Fort Meade & Hot Springs National Cemeteries
