Amazing Grace Triple Veteran’s Flight, Retired, Veteran
USMC USAF – WWII, Korea, Vietnam
Mesa, Arizona – 02-16-20
ABOUT THE MISSION:
The AZPGR has been asked to stand a flag line for three Veterans’ flights. It will be our honor to do so.
George Stafford flew missions on a B-17 as a USAF ball turret gunner during WWII. Common agreement is that this was the most dangerous job during the war. During his 17th mission he was injured by flak, breaking his ribs. All unnecessary weight was dumped and the plane limped back to England with several engines out. George was discharged after WWII and immediately re-enlisted with OCS, commissioned as an officer, and served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars building reinforcements with combat engineers. He retired as a Major and spend his next 25 years as a volunteer with the Scottsdale Police Department.
Joe Vanderbeke served in the U.S. Air Force beginning 1970, as an air traffic controller in Thailand during the Vietnam war. After his service he worked as an air traffic controller with the FAA, retiring after 23 years.
Karl Ford is a U.S. Marine, who served as a field radioman and later as an embassy guard in Nigeria and East Germany. After his service, Karl became a well-known national representative for Disabled American Veterans.
