Hello, my name is Hugo and I am a Senior Ride Captain in Indiana for the Patriot Guard Riders (www.patriotguard.org).  On Saturday, April 28th, 2007, I will be leaving at 0900 hrs. from Freedom Cycle (http://www.freedommc.com ) in South Bend, In., to ride my 1999 Harley Ultra Classic on this 4 Corners Ride that is put together by the Southern California Motorcycling Association.  This ride will take me to the 4 corners of the continental United States and has to be completed within 21 days.

The 4 corners (or official checkpoints) are:

1. San Ysidro, California

2. Blaine, Washington

3. Madawaska, Maine

4, Key West, Florida

My 1st “corner” will be in Blaine, Washington and will conclude in Madawaska, Maine. The complete ride is approx. 11,000 miles total.  On the way home from Maine, I am planning on attending the ceremonies conducted in Washington, DC for our Fallen Heroes on Memorial Day and riding home to Indiana with my fellow Brothers and Sisters of the PGR and others.  I am hoping to return to Freedom Cycle on Tuesday, May 29th.

Going along with me on this “mission” will be Terry McCray – a PGR Ride Captain who is also the Captain of Field Support here in Indiana.  He is a Gold Star father whose son was the first one killed from Indiana back in 2003.  He will not be riding – however he will be driving a black Chevy pick-up truck and pulling a black enclosed trailer that is clearly marked Patriot Guard Riders in gold letters on both sides and the back.

This trailer is a rolling Memorial to our Fallen Heroes, our veterans and their supporters.  Friends that we meet along the way are encouraged to sign the trailer in support of our troops.

Some of his duties on this mission will be the same duties that he does in an outstanding manner on a regular basis here in Indiana.  He will be available to talk to groups and/or individuals along the way (as time permits), handle any support functions, and answer any of the media’s requests.  The trailer will only be used for identifying who we are, carry some supplies, and possibly to sleep in on occasion. At NO time will it be used to carry my bike unless an absolute emergency arises.

What makes this ride different is the fact that - according to the SCMA, I will be the first one to fly a 3x5 American flag behind my bike for the entire distance around the USA.  I am doing this to show support for our troops who are currently serving and for all of our veterans nationwide.  We would also like to raise awareness for the PGR and show America that we really do care and that we fully support our troops.  We will also do our best to attend any PGR missions (funerals for our Fallen Heroes) that we can work into our schedule along the way

We fully intend to fund this entire mission out of our own pockets, however we would graciously accept any support that anyone can give beforehand or along the route i.e.; meals, gas, lodging, friendships etc. for us.   We would also encourage any groups or individuals to ride with us at any time and/or escort us through towns, etc.

Potential media coverage would keep the public informed as to our purpose and provide location updates. Terry will have a laptop computer with him in the truck for anyone wishing to contact us via e-mail as well as keeping the general PGR membership informed via the National site.  Anyone can also go to www.patriotguard.org  anytime after April 28th to get pictures of my bike and Terry's trailer (so you'll recognize us on the road) plus additional information about the PGR or to get updates concerning our mission and our whereabouts during the ride and where we expect to be in the days/hours ahead.  We will also have our cell phone numbers made available on the site for this event.

This will NOT be a leisurely ride.  In fact, it is very demanding.  However, considering what our veterans have done and are still doing for us, we feel privileged to do this in their honor.  If you or your group would like to make a contribution or do a fundraiser to help support our troops, we would be grateful.  All of the funds raised will be donated to the Patriot Guard Riders and used to support our troops in various ways.  Please contact us directly to answer any questions or concerns.  If you would like us to come to a meeting to talk to your group, we would welcome the chance to do so.  Please make checks payable to: Patriot Guard Riders and mail to Hugo’s address below.

Thank you!

Respectfully,

Hugo Reese

Hello and thank you all for your support! This is what we have so far. We will leave Indiana and take I-80 west. Our first "major" stop will be in Marseilles, Illinois where there is a wall memorial dedicated to the men & women who have lost their lives in the middle east. Terry's son's name is on the wall and there will be other Gold Star parents attending this, also. From there we will go to Des Moines, Iowa where we plan on spending our first night. Our second night is planned to be in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Then we'll continue to head west on 80 to Nevada where we'll take 93 north to I-84 and on in to Washington State.

From Washington, we'll take I-5 south thru Oregon and California. Then we'll pick up I-8 in southern Calif. and go east to I-10 in the Tucson, Az. area. Then I-10 east all the way to Florida where we'll take I-75 down the west coast, and bring I-95 up the ease coast and take I-95 all the way up to Maine. We also plan on stopping in Texas at the Brook Army Medical Center in Ft. Sam Houston (San Antonio area).

This is all tentative. Weather and other factors could cause us to change plans at any time. We are also compiling contact information from members nationwide who have offered support for us. If you are along the proposed route and would like to offer assistance, meet us or would like to hook up and ride with us for awhile, please fire an e-mail to me or Terry personally and we will add you to our list. Please include a phone number, too. We would like to meet as many people as possible along the route. Unfortunately, since we'll have to average 400-500 miles per day, we won't have a lot of time to spend at each stop. We will be stopping every 100-150 miles for gas and a leg stretch, tho. That would also be a good time to sign the trailer in support of our troops.

We will also try to keep everyone up to date during the ride on a daily basis.

Again, thank you all for what you do! God bless you all!

Respectfully,
Hugo

It would be nice if there was a way for the local Patriot Guard riders in the regions you're passing through to have a chance to ride with you for a ways as an Honor Guard to show the respect and appreciation we have for your trek.
This would need tight coordination because you have so many miles to cover that you cannot let anything delay you, especially repeatedly.
A possible benefit would be the likelyhood that finding a way to do that would probably give you many more chances for people to donate to the cause and collect a lot more money than you would otherwise.
Perhaps a cellphone contact once or twice a day could keep your itinerary and present location posted ?
Good luck and Safe riding.

Related to the prior suggestion, here's a shout out to the Patriot Guard community to show up at each of the Four Corners for a Group shot.
It's only 475 miles for me, so I think I can make it.
Plus, my route home matches your route for 400 of those miles.

Frank,
We have contact persons in place that we will be in contact with during the entire trek. They will be posting our progress daily on the PGR site. Yes we do welcome any riders PGR or non PGR to join us anytime on the route. The more support we have the more support the troops will benefit from this ride and that is what it is all about anyway. Any comments or suggestions can be directed to either Hugo or myself at our listed phone numbers or e-mails and we will respond to each and everyoneof them. Thank you all for your intrest and support for our ride and most of all for our troops.

I think maybe a contact person for each state/region would be appropriate. If Terry and I had a phone number of someone to contact we could better relay our position and time and a meeting place - possibly days ahead to that person(s). Of course, we're gonna try to do that via the PGR site anyway.

Excellent idea! It would be great to have a huge turn-out at each "corner" to mark the occasion. Also, if someone at each "corner" could be responsible for possible media coverage, we could bring even more awareness to the PGR and our mission to support our troops.

I'd like to remind everyone that we're doing this primarily to raise money for our troops. We have approx. 8 weeks until we leave. During that time, I would encourage you all to do whatever you can to generate donations. As we pass through your state, we would gladly accept any monies raised or you can mail the donations to me (check the initial posting for address). Please make all donations payable to the Patriot Guard Riders. 100% of all money raised will go to National PGR to support our troops in various ways. Let's make this a monumental fundraiser for our American Heroes and have a great time doing it!

One other thing that we'd like to do is to take as many pictures of as many people as we can from all over the U.S on this ride - and especially at the 4 corners - and put together a video that we can make available to our troops to show them that we're all proud of what they're doing for us and that we support them. If you and your group are going to be with us at some point, make a sign(s) for a group picture and we'll start putting it together. If someone would like to volunteer to put the pictures together on a video, let us know where we can send them. Does this sound like a do-able thing?

Tell ya what! We would be happy to take you directly to the War Memorial in Salem! It is located next to 700 Summer Street NE Salem OR 97301 (Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs), when we know what dates and times you are coming through, we will just have to escort you there ourselves! BTW, May 1st is Silver Star Day (for the Wounded) and it would be awesome if you are here for that! But where ever you are, it is still Silver Star Day, and I am sure the local PGR would love to have you have an escort to some significant place in their state!

Good luck to you on your ride. I did the math: 11,000 miles in 21 days is an average of 524 miles per day. Assuming there are no breakdowns along the way. That will be a grueling pace and will be hard to keep it up unless you are in excellent physical condition. The Iron Butt Association has some tips that will be good to follow. Please read the tips at web-page http://www.ironbutt.com/tech/aowprintout.cfm for long distance riding tips. I am worried about you my fellow PGR'er. If I can be of assistance to you here in the Portland Oregon area let me know. I admire what you two are planning to do but be careful. Since you are going to do this check out the Iron Butt website and you may be able to pick up several Ironbutt pins and certificates. They have the rules on their website. http://www.ironbutt.com/about/default.cfm

Vinnie - Thanks for the offer of support. We'll give ya a call when we can better pinpoint a date and time.

Gorilla35 - We won't be going through KS or Mo, but we'll be close in Grand Island, Nebraska if ya wanna come join us for awhile. We're taking I-80 across. Thanks.

ChuckRSTD05 (and anyone else) - The distance between the 4 Corners is only about 7,500 - 8,000 miles taking the most direct route. The entire ride - from Indiana back to Indiana is approx. 11,000 miles - and we've given ourselves about 30 days to do that, so that's only 366 miles average per day. Should be no problem, but still not a leisurely ride. Of course, we're gonna try to "bank" as many miles as we can when the roads and weather are good so we can maybe take a day off from time to time, or to make time for repairs, oil changes, etc. Thanks for your concern, Brother - but it's not as bad as you thought. I have already checked with the Iron Butt Association and am planning to get my SaddleSore 1000 at some point in the ride (1,000 miles in a 24 hr. period).

Thanks again,
Hugo

posted @ Thursday, March 08, 2007 7:47 AM by Hugo

Incidentally - the 4 Corners of the ride is all that has to be done within 21 days to get credit for it. However, if something happens that I don't make it within the 21 days, my plans won't change. Going around the Country in support of our troops is our primary ride - the 4 Corners is secondary. Just FYI.

It looks like your route will be the same as ours: Blaine-San Yisidro-Key West-Madawaska. Would like to shake your hand as you go south from Blaine and pass through Olympia. Olympia is about 170mi south from Blaine and should be a good gas stop for your Ultra. Good on ya brohter. I ran the Four Corners last year with Drake Evans. It is a challenge. I had a small American flag on my handle bar of my 99 Voyager. We wore our Combat Veterans International Vests on the whole trip. We met some great people. I live in Washington. So if you need any help in this area, give me a call. Drakes name is listed as Evens on the 4C list but our miles covered and the other details are correct on the website.

Hey there...we here in Oregon need to know when to set up an escort....PLEASE CAL ME....my cell number is 541-974-1619....I am in Portland, and we have a lot of people waiting to hear when you will be coming through Oregon....we have an Airport Escort Mission coming up, but not sure which day the Remains of Sgt. Michael Vaughan will be arriving in Salem, OR, but would be midday on the day of arrival....if you are in the area, you are welcome to join us for that escort. Anyway, let us know ASAP when to meet and where just north of Vancouver on I-5 southbound is a rest area....I think it is Gee Rest Stop....we could meet there and take you south....the Iraq Afghanistan War Memorial is located in Salem, and you had mentioned a desire to see that!

I'm right on 95 north about about 120 miles south of Madawaska so if you can would love to have you stop if you can i'll take you to Dustin's resting place. So if you can make it let me know. Be hard for me you to get a hold of you so call if you can stop and let me know if you would thank you. My # is 207 365 4110. Looks like the 22 of May you will be coming my way. Sorry about the crazy California traffic. Can you believe that stop and go stuff was due to the accident on the other side of the freeway?! At least you made new fans while stopped in traffic on the I5 south. I sure wish I could have gone many more miles with you, but it was an honor to join you for those few miles. Ride safe. Dave
