UPDATE!!!! TIME CHANGES

Due to secret service requests we must be parked at the theater no later than 12:00 noon now. That means all times for staging areas will be adjusted. We will pull out of Gulfport at 7am instead of 7:30am now. That will put us in Hattiesburg at 8 am now instead of 8:30. We will pull out for Meridian at 8:15am. The Jackson contingent with CAJUN leading will now pull out at 8am from the same place. If I have you totally confused please email me.
Ed

NOW A MISSION
We have been formally invited to participate in the services of Congressman Sonny Montgomery our Mississippi brother. The service will be held at 2pm Tuesday, May 16th in Meridian, MS, at the Temple Theatre.
Former U.S. Rep. Gillespie V. "Sonny" Montgomery, 85, of Meridian, a 35 year Army veteran who represented Mississippi's 3rd District in Congress as a conservative Democrat for 15 terms, died early Friday at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. He had been hospitalized for several days.
A public visitation will be held Monday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Air National Guard base at Key Field.
I have Percy Holland running Road Captain on this mission. He is close friends with Sonny's Aide, the Asst Police Chief and asst mayor. Couldn't ask for better connections now can you? I will be speaking with Percy this morning and am hoping to get him to represent the PGR at city hall tomorrow. After the meeting he will be giving me a call to firm up last minute details and a staging area location in the Meridian area. At the moment I plan on pulling out the staging area in Meridian at 1pm and head to Temple theater. This may change but at least this gives you a rough idea to plan around.
For those of us on the coast the staging area will be the hwy 49 K-Mart parking lot in Orange Grove. We will be pulling out at 7:30am sharp. That should put us in Hattiesburg at around 8:30am. For our lower mid state members if you want to head up 59 with us we will be pulling out of one of the gas stations on the North side of the hwy 49-I59 interchange at 8:45am. If you plan on meeting us there please email me so that I'll be looking for you.
This gentleman was one of us and this mission will be twofold, one to render honors to a man that went the extra mile in Washington for all military members and two it will give us, the PGR, national coverage. So now is the time to ask your boss for that day off or suddenly become sick for the day and have the Mississippi Contingent of the PGR show up in full force. There's over 300 of us in Mississippi now. It's a moment that will remain with you forever. Make the effort.
Ed Baker, MS PGR State Captain.

Funeral services for former Congressman G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Temple Theater in Meridian. More details will be posted here as they become available.

President Bush 41 will be in attendance.

Greg

Further information including hometown will be posted as it becomes available.

No. 432-06 IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Public/Industry(703)428-0711

Secretary Rumsfeld on the Passing of Sonny Montgomery
"With the passing on of Sonny Montgomery, America has lost a true
patriot, and the men and women in uniform have lost one of their most
passionate advocates.

"A decorated veteran of World War II -- where he won the Bronze
Star for capturing a German machine gun nest -- as well as the Korean War,
Sonny Montgomery brought his personal experience and expertise in military
matters to bear in a lifetime of public service.

"It was a privilege to serve with Sonny when he first joined the
House of Representatives in the late 1960s.  Because of the way he treated
everyone with grace and respect, Sonny would go on to become one of the most
beloved and respected members of the Congress on both sides of the aisle.
Sonny's most outstanding legislative accomplishment was the law that bears his
name -- the Montgomery G.I. Bill -- which extended educational benefits to
countless thousands of soldiers in the nation's all-volunteer service.

"The title of a recent biography of Sonny Montgomery put it well.
He truly was, 'The Veteran's Champion.'"

what do you say when you offer condolences to America, then realize you are America too?
This man has given everything...his youth, innocense and life were all in service to a greater cause...AMERICA.  My heart hurts for OUR loss.

Family of Sonny Montgomery, I offer my deepest condolences and thank you for sharing his lifetime with us.  What a wonderful celebration of life should be in store for him and a family of heroes who shared him with us!

If it weren't for Sonny, many people like myself would not have been able to lift themselves up from a very low station in life. If you've ever guzzled a jug of water before bed to stave off hunger you know what I am talking about. God Bless this Hero.

In today's politics not many of our leaders are willing to step up and lead, instead choosing to follow the path of least resistance. Sonny Montgomery was a true leader, with a vision and compassion that was real. He never forgot his brothers and sisters still serving and was one of the true champions our cause. His passing is a great loss to us all.

Go now unto your final duty station knowing you have earned your place amongst the hero's with which you now stand. May your family take comfort in the generations of service members you have aided.

Sonny was my Dad's hero. My dad was a service connected disabled Vet who depended on the VA for his health care most of his life. Sonny went to bat for my dad EVERY TIME. He will be missed. Here's an article from the Jackson, MS paper:

Mississippi's soldier was relieved of duty in the wee hours of the morning in his beloved Meridian.
Former Congressman G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery, who died at 4:15 a.m. today, now belongs to the ages. He was a great man and a distinguished Mississippian.
We had a long personal friendship and I have admired his professional life since my childhood.
After 30 years of unblemished service in the U.S. House of Representatives, a decade in the Mississippi State Senate and a long and distinguished military career, it's easy to focus on Montgomery's political life as we reflect on his legacy in Mississippi.
But we should not forget that at his core, Sonny was an old soldier — a fighting veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a Bronze Star winner who saw combat.
It was Mongomery's life as a soldier that shaped his political career. He became the very best friend that veterans of American military service ever had. Through the Montgomery GI Bill, Sonny did more to help middle and lower income Americans get a college education than perhaps any other American.
Montgomery worked long and hard for POWs and MIAs, making 14 trips to Vietnam and many to North Korea to negotiate for the return of the remains of American servicemen.
Sonny had the "common touch." I will greatly miss my friend. Mississippi and the United States of America will miss a great patriot.
Mississippi State University will miss one of her greatest sons.
May God bless Sonny Montgomery and welcome a tired old soldier home to his rest.

Thank you Sonny,

Greg

Almost a year ago Meridian hosted a Welcome Home for troops back from SW Asia. Even though he was frail, Gen. Montgomery was there to welcome them. He was truly a great Mississippian.

If this mission makes, I'll ride down Tuesday a.m. from Corinth. Anyone want to meet up along the way?

WOW...wish I could make this one all the way over in Miss. I was privileged to serve on the Naiotnal Jr. College advisory board for Miss. that Senator Montgomery founded. I had the honor of speaking with him personally on several occasions. A senator with genuine concern and care for his people!! We shared stories of his, and my fathers from WWII on one occasion!!
He will surely be missed!! What a legacy he leaves!! What a man he was!! And is in our hearts!!
Prayers and blessings to the family!
