19 Sep 2006 9:13 AM Alert
LATEST UPDATE!: 9-22-06, 1354 hrs.

Just got word that the day and time are as originally planned, Saturday the 23rd, 1600 hour (4:00 p.m.). Mission is a go. See you there!!

The 428th Quartermaster unit is returning home this weekend to Volk Field and Ft McCoy. At this time it is scheduled for around 1715 (5:15 pm) 23 Sept 2006 at Volk Field, which is by Camp Douglas right off of I-90 exit 55. Time is fluid and has changed 4 times already but is looking pretty solid. They would like us at the Main Gate at 1600 hrs(4:00 p.m.)

What the "plan A" is at this time is for us to greet the plane and then to find soldiers that do not have family greeting them and welcome them home. This unit is made up of personel from Ohio and Minnesota and also some from other places so some members will not have anyone there.

"Plan B" would be for us to escort them to Ft McCoy and greet them there but I think that the weather may preclude that. This is what they would like as long as the weather permits.

Now, the catch. To gain access to Volk Field to greet the returning soldiers we need one of two things to make it easier to get on base. One thing would be to have the name of the person we are there to meet, which we won't have, or two, names of those who are going to greet the soldiers so we can get on the list at the gate as being allowed. IMNSHO, it would be better to be on the list and not be there then to be there and not be on the list, so, if you think you might make this mission I need you to add your name to this thread so we can give it to the contact and get you on base. We have a name of one of the heros to use as a backup, but I still would like to have your names for the list. Those who have responded here are already on the list as long as you gave me your first and last name.

Remember also that if you are riding a motorcycle for this that you are going to be required to have all the safety gear that the Army wants including helmet, fingered gloves, long pants, long sleeves or coat, hard shoes and since it will be in the evening, a reflective vest. I was told that the vest IS required, they can be gotten at outdoor stores such as Gander Mountain or Wal-mart. If you can't find one and plan to ride motorcycle let me know and I'll get some. Also you should have all your paperwork for your bike handy. If you are driving a car you will need your license and regisration and insurance also. It does not look like it is going to be too warm so I have not decided which I will be bringing, only that I will be there.

As a side note, all vehicles are subject to search so don't bring things like guns, alcohol, knives or anything illegal with you.

So, list out your names and let's get this mission going for the troops. This is the kind I like to do best!

Henry...

Thanks for taking this mission on.  I will be there from the MN Metro area but will be caging it.  Deer and bikes are as bad a combination as alcohol and bikes.

Many of these soldiers are from MN so I am grateful for the WI PGR team taking this on.

You have my support Henry....

Henry, these are the best missions of all.

At this time, I have other PGR obligations in Rochester, but if date or time changes are made, I will make this Special Mission.

Welcome Home, Soldiers!

Henry, I will be standing by for this one pending my work schedule. Nothing better than Happy Endings to time serving your country or any other dangerous or important mission we must complete. Keep us all posted on times and I will be there if I can.

I am standing by to make this my first PGR mission. I grew up in Ohio, but now live in Wisconsin and I would welcome the opportunity to greet those who have no one waiting.

Awesome! After six memorial missions in the last 12 days, a welcome home is just the medicine my tired old body (mentally and physically) could use.

Henry, I'm not sure at this time if I can make it or not, but certainly add my name to the list as I would hate to be left of if this works out that I can make it. Thanks for your effort on this!

I am not sure if we can make this but a homecoming missions would certainly be a welcome change. We have a PGR meeting in the morning and will try to make this mission. Please add both of us to the list as I would hate to find the time and not be able to attend. We will certainly try to be there.

Thank you for taking this on.

Thanks for taking on this mission as ride captain.  This welcome home is especially important to me for two reasons.  First, it will be my first mission with the Patriot Guard.  Second, my son is a platoon leader in the 428th and I am really looking forward to his homecoming after a year in Iraq.  Come whatever, I will be there, one way or another.

Another equipment question about reflective vests.  Are blaze orange hunting vest acceptable?  Or do they need reflective tape?

I looked up what I could for the Army and Navy safety centers and they all say "reflective". There does not seem to be a color requirement except for "brightly colored" but the orange ones are the ones I've seen.
