25 Jul 2008 5:09 PM Alert

A Memorial Service for Kenneth Lawrence Holm, F3, U.S. Navy, is
planned for Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at the Clarkfield School Gymnasium  on Hwy 59, with Memorial Headstone Dedication at the Lutheran Cemetery in rural Clarkfield, MN. The service will be conducted with full military honors. A memorial headstone provided by the U.S. Navy has now been erected at the Holm family plot in his honor, and will be unveiled in the dedication ceremony.

Mr. Holm was among Minnesota's casualites at Pearl Harbor, and was Clarkfield's first casualty of World War II. He died aboard the USS Oklahoma when she was the first ship torpedoed by Japanese planes on December 7, 1941, sinking within 15 minutes. His remains were presumably recovered along with other shipmates when the ship was raised in 1943. All of the recovered remains were interred in a common grave in the Punch Bowl Cemetery in Honolulu, Hawaii. The USS Oklahoma suffered 429 casualties--second only to the USS Arizona, which had 1177.  Two surviving members of the U.S.S. Oklahoma's crew have been located living in Minnesota, and one of them, Mr. Herman Hinrichs, will be attending these ceremonies.

The Mn Patriot Guard received this mission request on April 12 from Kenneth Holm's nephew, Blair Holm,  for our attendance. It will be a privilege to attend these ceremonies and honor the memory of one of Minnesota's first casualties of WW II.
He writes via email: "I belong to Semper Fi#1, Memorial Honor Detail, Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside California. We provide full military honors for veterans who have passed away. You can check us out at www.usmcpride.com. Again, thank you for your help with this upcoming service."

Sincerely,

Blair Holm

11:15 - 11:30 am  Marshall Sector Staging at HyVee/Perkins, at intersection of Hwy's 59 and 23 on south edge of Marshall.  Leaving promptly at 11:30 am for 25 mile ride to Clarkfield.

12:00 noon - 12:25 pm  Clarkfield Staging at school gynmasium , east side of Hwy 59, just north of intersection with Hwy 67.  Use parking lot across street to the south of gymnasium.

12:25 pm Mission Briefing.  We will stand a flag line at entrances to gymnasium for 1:30 Memorial Service, then lead the procession with flags flying to a rural cemetery, where we will again form a flag line.  The procession will then proceed through our flag line to the site of the headstone dedication.

After the dedication at the cemetery, we will ride again back to Clarkfield for a reception at a local church.  Two surviving members of the Oklahoma have been located living in Minnesota, and one of them, Mr. Herman Hinrichs, will be attending these ceremonies.

Please remember your 3x5 flags, and be self-sufficient as we stand and ride in honor for Kenneth Holm.

Here are a couple of links concerning this mission. The first one is an article from a Honolulu newpaper concerning the efforts to create a Pearl Harbor Memorial to the USS Oklahoma.

My prayers are with the Holm family as you gather to dedicate the Memorial Headstone in honor of your loved one F3 Kenneth Holm who was among the very first casualties of WWII during the Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor.

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth , nor any other created thing , shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. - Romans 8:38-39.

What a befitting Tribute to our Hero F3 Kenneth Holm, Navy, WWII Veteran.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you this day. He is one of America's Heroes that will NEVER be forgotten.

Rest Safely and Securely in God's Loving Arms, Kenneth.

Going home, going home,
I'm just going home.
Quiet-like, slip away-
I'll be going home.
It's not far, just close by;
Jesus is the Door;
Work all done, laid aside,
Fear and grief no more.
Friends are there, waiting now.
He is waiting, too.
See His smile! See His hand!
He will lead me through.

Morning Star lights the way;
Restless dream all done;
Shadows gone, break of day,
Life has just begun.
Every tear wiped away,
Pain and sickness gone;
Wide awake there with Him!
Peace goes on and on!
Going home, going home,
I'll be going home.
See the Light! See the Sun!
I'm just going home.

Eighteen Minnesota Patriot Guard Riders from at least four different sectors attending the mission on July 30th in Clarkfield, Mn, to bring home the spirit of F3 Kenneth Holm, a casualty of the torpedoing and sinking of the USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor. Survivor Herman Hinrichs was a special guest and speaker at the ceremony, along with Keynote Speaker Clark Dyrud, Commisioner, Mn Dept of Veteran's Affairs.

A ceremony was held in the Clarkfield gym, where the PGR was requested to form a corridor of flags for the Honor Guard to walk through at the beginning of the ceremony, and to exit through at the end. We maintained the flag line for the entire audience to walk through, then led the procession to the cemetery, where a headstone was unveiled and dedicated, with full military honors.

Navy veteran and Marshall Sector member Jim Holien and RC Alan Peterson presented the family of Kenneth Holm a Fallen Heroes patch, a Mn Patriot Guard patch, and a Mission Accomplished pin at the close of the ceremony.

Here is a picture link to this mission[

A special thank you to Jeff Randall, the funeral director who worked hard and long to organize this special memorial ceremony, members of the Clarkfield police department and sheriff's deputies who provided traffic control, the ladies of the Lutheran Church in Clarkfield who served lemonade and cookies, and to the members of the Mn Patriot Guard who attended this mission.
