Lt.Col. Charles Arnett USAF (Ret),22,24,March Phoenix, Arizona

I received the following email last night:

Louann Thomas,

I met the PGR last December at the Hyman Stiglitz funeral in Tucson. My
father, Charles Arnett, was there as well. He was a pilot with the 492nd
Bomb Group, a former POW and three war veteran, retiring as a Lt Col in the
USAF. He passed away Wednesday the 12th of March, 2008, at the age of 88 and
will be buried at the VA Cemetery in Phoenix on Monday the 24th of March (I
believe at 10:30 am). At the Stiglitz service my dad said he would be
greatly honored if the Patriot Guard would attend his funeral. I wasn't
expecting that day to come this soon.

I talked with a director at Bunker Mortuary in Mesa this morning about the
arrangements for a full military honors service at the VA Cemetery and I
mentioned the Patriot Guard Riders. He had no knowledge of your fine group,
so I told him I'd see what I could find out in order to have my father
honored that day with your presence. Any help you can give me in
coordinating this with the mortuary and the VA would be greatly appreciated.

Life is just too short.  We all say it, but David pointed something out to
me I thought you should know.  In 1944 a very young Charles Arnett was shot
down.  One of the crew died but Charles survived and was captured as a POW.
In calculating the days after Charles "should have died" he lived an extra
22,912 days and he made every one of them count.

To the Friends and Family of Charles Arnett, please accept our deepest
condolences at this time of great loss.  Please know we will keep this great
American in our hearts as we will you.  Mere words cannot ease the pain, I
wish they could.  Our hearts and hands reach to hold you now, we too mourn
the loss of one who gave so much.

Lt.Col. Charles Arnett (Ret) Stand Down Sir!  Your mission accomplished with
great heart and spirit, you are a part of American history and reflect with
Honor The Greatest Generation.  Your generation taught all of us how to move
forward and we will now carry your sword, your spirit forward with pride and
passion as you did thru your life.  Thank YOU for loving this Country and
standing so proudly for Her.  Thank You Sir for the life I have enjoyed as
an American.
I am honored to stand for you now as you stood for all of US for so very
long.

you choose to)

Rest Safely and Securely in God's Loving Arms, Charles.

Going home, going home,
I'm just going home.
Quiet-like, slip away-
I'll be going home.
It's not far, just close by;
Jesus is the Door;
Work all done, laid aside,
Fear and grief no more.
Friends are there, waiting now.
He is waiting, too.
See His smile! See His hand!
He will lead me through.

Morning Star lights the way;
Restless dream all done;
Shadows gone, break of day,
Life has just begun.
Every tear wiped away,
Pain and sickness gone;
Wide awake there with Him!
Peace goes on and on!
Going home, going home,
I'll be going home.
See the Light! See the Sun!
I'm just going home.

Final Inspection

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now,soldier.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime.
When the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord.
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don’t, I’ll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now,soldier
you’ve borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets;
you’ve done your time in Hell."

Oh!  I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
