Sturdivant received his high school education through the home
school program. In 2004, he received an appointment to the U.S. Naval
Academy, Annapolis, Maryland.
However, he chose to enlist into the U.S. Army Reserve for six years
while concurrently attending Pulaski Technical College in Little
Rock. Two
years later, he transferred to the University of Central
Arkansas in Conway where he
studied mathematics.
Sturdivant joined the U.S. Army Reserve on March 29,
2005, and,
following basic training, attended the Special Warfare Training Center at Fort Bragg, North
Carolina, as the

His first and only unit of assignment

unit of the U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations
Command (Airborne), headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
He was mobilized in November 2006 and deployed with the battalion
shortly thereafter and was scheduled to complete his deployment and
return home to the United
States less
than two weeks prior to his death.
Sturdivant’s military schools include Basic Combat Training, Civil
Affairs Specialist Course, Warrior Leadership Course, Combat Lifesaver
Course and the IED Defeat Course.
His military awards included two Army
Achievement Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, a Good Conduct Medal,
National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on
Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” device,
NCO Professional Development Ribbon and the Army Service Ribbon. He was
posthumously awarded the Bronze Star.
In his civilian life, Sturdivant was a full-time college student and

My deepest sympathy to the family of Sergeant Michael R. Sturdivant. I appreciate all of his contributions to our country and may there be a special place for him in heaven. He gave his 'all' so young. He has joined the ranks of heroes and I love him for that. He is America's son, and I am an American. That makes him partly my loss too. I will never forget.

Final Inspection
The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining. Just as brightly as his brass. "Step forward now,soldier. How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?" The soldier squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint. I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep.... Though I worked a lot of overtime. When the bills just got too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place, Among the people here. They never wanted me around, Except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here, Lord. It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don’t, I’ll understand. There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod. As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God. "Step forward now,soldier you’ve borne your burdens well. Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets; you’ve done your time in Hell."

I have had close relations with the Battalion here in Iraq due in essence to my job, with the loss of any life is hard, but this really hit home. I hope that the family can find comfort during this time. Even though Michael had more to give and receive in his life, he gave the ultimate sacrifice for the friend of this country.

Rest Safely and Securely in God's Loving Arms, Michael.
Going home, going home,
I'm just going home.
Quiet-like, slip away-
I'll be going home.
It's not far, just close by;
Jesus is the Door;
Work all done, laid aside,
Fear and grief no more.
Friends are there, waiting now.
He is waiting, too.
See His smile! See His hand!
He will lead me through.
Morning
Star lights the way;
Restless dream all done;
Shadows gone, break of day,
Life has just begun.
Every tear wiped away,
Pain and sickness gone;
Wide awake there with Him!
Peace goes on and on!
Going home, going home,
I'll be going home.
See the Light! See the Sun!
I'm just going home.
