To all SD PGR members,
We have finally received information about the National Guard departures for Thursday and Sunday. The information is as follows:
The advance team will be departing Sioux Falls via commercial air at 0510 and 0600 Thursday morning. Any members who can be at the airport, in the lobby, to see these members off, please be there at 0400. Parking should be available at the curbside in front of the airport. We will be seeing the members off before they go through security.
The main group of 180 soldiers will be departing Sunday morning. Members are asked to stage at the J L Harley shop on 60th Street, just off I-29, Exit 83, at 0700. We will go kickstands up at 0715 sharp to travel to the National Guard facility on Minnesota Ave. If anyone should miss the departure from J L Harley, just travel east on 60 St one mile to Minnesota, turn right (south), turn right at the south end of the airport grounds onto Algonquin St, and travel to the Air National Guard entry. Twelve bikes will provide escort of the buses from their to the Air National Guard hanger where the 147th will de-bus. We will provide a flag line for the troops to the aircraft. They will be going through an aircraft hanger before boarding, so opportunity may be available for us to visit with the soldiers before boarding.
For all who were unable to attend the activation ceremony on Wednesday, it was a spectacular event. More than 3500 people were in attendance at the arena. State Captain 'SirlancelotSD' presented the unit commander with a PGR flag which the unit will fly at their base in Iraq. After the ceremony, we were approached by many people asking about joining the PGR. The soldiers were appreciative of us being there to see them off, although we all know that it isn't about us. Cory Briest, the Charlie Co soldier from Yankton was there. Cory is still recovering from his wounds suffered in 2005 in Iraq during his deployment.
Any members with questions on this mission, please email RC Jim at chiefie@triotel.net or SC Lance at sirlancelotsd@patriotguard.org .

To all members planning to attend the 147th FA, South Dakota National Guard, send-off in Sioux Falls on Wednesday, Oct 25:
Our posted staging plans include departing the staging area at 11:45. This was based on the information we were given that
the Guard members and their families were instructed to arrive at the Arena at 12:30. We have just learned that Guard members
have now been instructed to arrive at 12 noon. Therefore, I would like to back up our departure time from the staging area to
11:30 am. The staging area is close to the area where we will be setting rebar in the ground for our flag line, and setting up
a manual flag line.
Remember that there will not be a motorcycle escort during this mission, so motorcycles are not needed.
However, the weather is expected to be warm and clear, so riding is a good thing!!
At this time, the only information we have for the unit departure is to expect two separate flights departing at 9 am and 10 am.
on Sunday morning. We have not been told how early the Guard unit is to report to the departure terminal. Therefore, we cannot
give a definate time for staging at the J L Harley. But use this information as a planning guide in case this information becomes
certain.
The advance team departing on Thursday morning is expected to go very early in the morning via commercial flights, but they have
not told us the times certain yet. Sorry to leave every one in the dark. The specifics will be posted as soon as we know them.

Final mission information: This will be a two-part, possibly three-part, mission. This mission is for the deployment of B Battery, 147th Field Artillery from Sioux Falls. Part one: Unit Activation Ceremony, Oct. 24th 1 pm., Sioux Falls Arena: We will stage at the southeast parking lot corner of the civic arena at 11:30 a.m. Briefing will be at 11:30 and we will make the short ride to the arena at 11:45 am. We will be posting a flag line on the sidewalk outside the entrance into the building. If we have flags enough, we will also post flags on the grassy area across the driveway from the entrance. The families of the deploying soldiers will be arriving at 12:30 pm. At 1 pm, we will move indoors for the activation ceremony. We are listed in the program, and will be presenting a PGR flag to the unit for them to fly in Iraq. As soon as the ceremony ends, we will re-deploy to our original positions to man the flag line again. Possible part two: Advance Team Deployment, Oct 25: There will be a 6 man advance team departing Sioux Falls on Oct 25 via commercial air. We will post the flight times as soon as it is known, and will tell everyone at the staging area on the 24th, if known. We will have a flag line inside the airport in the lobby at the bottom of the escalator. Part three: Unit Deployment:, Sioux Falls Airport, Oct 28th: We will be providing a 12-bike escort from the National Guard Armory to the closest point allowed where the Guardsmen will be boarding their flight. All members not on bikes will be standing a flag line near the entrance where the Guard vehicle will be entering the flight line. This flight will not be out of the commercial airport, but will be in General Aviation. The military has not released the flight time for security reasons, so we will not know this until the day before the flight. They do anticipate that the flight will likely be mid-morning. The staging place for the bikes will be at J L Harley on Hwy 38 just east of the Flying J Truck Stop off I-29 at exit 83. If anyone has questions relating to this mission, please contact either myself at the email address below, or Ride Captain Jim Lentsch at chiefie@triotel.net.

The B Battery 1st Batalion 147th Field Artilary based out of Salem, SD, will be departing out of
Sioux Falls for eventual deployment to Iraq. The unit will deploy to Ft Lewis, WA, for 10 weeks
before the move to Iraq. Approximately 185 members of the unit will be reporting to Sioux Falls
on Oct 23. A deployment activation ceremony will be held on Oct 24 at 1pm. Governor Rounds
will be in attendance. At that ceremony, we will be presenting a PGR flag to the unit for them to
fly at their base in Iraq.
An advance unit will be leaving Sioux Falls on Oct 25th, and the remainder of the unit deploys
on Oct 28th.
Plans are being made for motorcycle escort for all troop movements between the NG Armory
and the Sioux Falls Arena, and also to the Sioux Falls (Joe Foss Field) Airport. A flag line will
also be set up during troop movements.
These are our own 'home town' troops deploying to the war. I know of at least one SD PGR member
whose son is deploying with this unit. We need to support this mission as strongly as we can. I
urge all members who can be there for any part of the mission to please make plans to do so.
Members who want to attend, but need help with living quarters for a night or two, please reply to
me or post to this thread. If something can be worked out, lets as least try.
Staging areas and times will be confirmed as events become more planned.

| Sad but true we are counting the days.
Our Son is packed and ready to go.
As we cherish every moment he is here, we pray for strength and courage for us all and our brave soldiers; for the day we will see and hug them again and say "Welcome Home Sons".
With pride we will stand as we witness their activation and departure. With pride we know you are there to salute them, we feel honored.
Knowing how tough it is to get to missions, we will be ever so thankful for your presence. See you there.

| The activation portion of this three-part mission went very well. RC Jim and I arrived at the staging point early, so we decided to begin placing rebar in the ground in the grass across from the entry to the arena. Over each piece of rebar stands a US Flag on a 7-ft pole. We had 40 flags lined up, 5 feet apart. It made quite a site for everyone to pass by on their way to the arena. We all held flags at the entryway to the arena for people to walk by, and we received a lot of comments from people about how impressive that looked. When we entered the arena for the activation ceremony, we were surprised at the size of the crowd. Best estimates say between 3500-4000 people were in attendance! After the State Adjutant General and Governor Rounds spoke, I was introduced onto the stage. RC Jim and I went onto the stage where I gave a three-minute speech about the PGR and our mission. After expressing our appreciation for our troops, we showed them a PGR flag, and presented the flag to the unit commander with the request that they fly the flag at their base in Iraq. He agreed that he would be honored to fly our flag. At the end of the activation, many people approached all of us to ask about joining the PGR. I gave out a lot of cards, and we all gave out information. I've been receiving emails since then with requests for information and from people telling me that they have signed up as members. We didn't do this mission for our own publicity. But having more people join us makes more people who can help us show the honor, respect and appreciation for our troops that is our mission. Thanks to all who were able to attend this misison. In every mission, it seems like there is something that stays in your mind for a long time. At this mission, for me it was one single soldier. Outside the arena I encountered a private standing by himself with tears in his eyes. I stopped to talk with him. He had no family there to tell him goodbye. We spoke a while, and at the end, I told him that when they return from Iraq, I asked him to come up to me and shake my hand. I would be his family, and be there waiting for him to come home. I left him with the hug that his family should have given him, and left. I will be watching for that young man next year when we do a welcome home mission for the 147th. My welcome home mission will be for him. |

As my last note for this mission, I thought I would post the speech that I gave on stage at the activation ceremony. This is for the members unable to be there, and for those who were but were unable to hear very well.
Good afternoon. My name is Lance Bultena, and I am the State Captain of the South Dakota chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders. If you are not familiar with us, I invite you to visit our website at www.patriotguard.org . The Patriot Guard Riders is a group of patriotic Americans who have made it our mission to show honor, respect, and appreciation for, and to stand for those who have stood for us. We are primarily known as a motorcycle group, although riding a motorcycle is not a requirement. We are often referred to as a Veterans group, and many of us are, but that also is not a requirement for membership. What is required is unwavering appreciation for the freedoms that we Americans have and respect for those who have fought to make and keep this nation free!
Many Americans over the past two-plus centuries have fought for and defended the cause of freedom all over the world. Nearly 1.3 million of them have made the ultimate sacrifice. President Ronald Reagan once said that we, as a nation, are never more than one generation away from losing our freedom. Well, I, for one, firmly believe that as long as we keep producing men and women like those currently serving in our countries Armed Forces, and that includes B Battery, 1st Battalion, 147th Field Artillery, we will keep our freedom!
At this time, I’d like to ask the commander of B Battery, 1st Battalion, 147th Field Artillery to come forward. Sir, on behalf of the over 116,000 members nationwide of the Patriot Guard Riders, and especially the 300+ members in South Dakota, I’d like to thank you and your unit for your service to our country, and to present to you, with the request that you fly it at your base in Iraq, this flag of the Patriot Guard Riders. We present this flag to you to remind you that you have a group of patriotic Americans standing here at home who are proud of you, and believe in you! (I salute you, sir and all the men and women of the 147th Field Artillery!)
(Present the flag and render hand salute, or shake hands) |

Great job Lance,
As for the portion that I was involded in it stated on Saturday for the ride to Sioux Falls , better then then the next morning at 5AM in 34 degree weather. Myself and Jon meet up with Jim and everyone else at J&L at 7:00 AM, like I said The TV had the temp at 34. We broke into two groups with family and friends in the group of 12 riders for the escort and Jim and the rest setting up te greet the soilders when we arrived at the flightline. At the National Guard hall we were meet by Sioux Falls police for the escort and stood by our motorcycles for formation. With a great escort we had two buses on the way, were were picked up by the Air Guard at the gate and taken out onto the flightline where Jim and the rest were set up, The 12 riders and Jim returned to the hall to escort the second set of buses without the police escort this time, but it again went off without a problem. Back to the flightline, the flag line was set up from the door of the building to the steps of the first Aircraft. After the loading of the first plane was complete we moved to the edge of the flightline and stood a flag line there. the flags were raised to present colors as the plane taxied out. We had about 20 minutes before the second plane was loaded and some of the riders were busy answering questions from the crowd of people, The line was again set to the second aircraft at this time we were meet by the Guards command, these men walked back the forth down the line to thank everyone standing the lflag ine for being there. As the soldiers were going up the stairs the pilot stood and greeted every soldier as they got to the top of the stairs and thanked them for want there we doing. We then again moved to the edge of the flightline and presented colors as the plane taxied out. I want to thank Jim for a job well done and everyone from Rolling Thunder, Legion Riders, Christian Riders (and yes I will miss a few names) that was there in the great South Dakota morning to show these soldiers that we do care. My rambling is done and I will be putting this and pictures on the SD Forum I hope by monday evening. |
