WARNING ORDER… WARNING ORDER… WARNING ORDER…

ALCON,

Here’s some initial information for missions are tentatively scheduled from 28 April to 1 May 2006.  This information will be updated as more detailed information is determined.

Standby to copy and hold all questions until the end.

1.  Situation.  On 18 April 2006, an American hero, CPT Ian P. Weikel, U. S. Army, of Colorado gave the ultimate sacrifice while conducting combat operations in Balad, Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV.  The Patriot Guard Riders have been invited to escort CPT Ian P. Weikel’s remains from Dover, AFB to the funeral home in Arlington, Virginia, provide a corridor of U. S. Flags at the funeral home during viewing times and to escort CPT Ian P. Weikel’s remains from the funeral home to his final resting place in Arlington National Cemetery.  Dates for these particular events are still undetermined but are anticipated to occur during 28 April through 1 May timeframe.  All available members are highly encouraged to participate/attend all three events (SEE COORDINATING INSTRUCTIONS).

A. Terrain & Weather.  The road system in Arlington, VA and the vicinity of Arlington National Cemetery can be confusing for drivers and riders not familiar with the area and is routinely heavily congested with traffic which is unpredictable.  All participating PGR members are encouraged to conduct their own terrain analysis and map reconnaissance prior to departing for this mission in order to arrive on time.  The current forecasted weather is not assessed to interfere with this mission.  It is anticipated to be clear and sunny with a 0% to 20% chance of precipitation and 53% humidity with a high temperature of 67’F.

2. Mission.  Tentatively, from 28 April 2006 through 1 May 2006, the Patriot Guard Riders attends the funeral service of fallen American hero, CPT Ian P. Weikel, U. S. Army as invited guests of the family. Our primary purpose is two-fold; 1. Show our sincere respect for CPT Ian P. Weikel, U. S. Army and his family and 2. Shield the mourning family and friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors through strictly legal and non-violent means. Currently there are no indications for this type of activity for this mission.

3. Execution

A. Intent.  This is a solemn occasion.  We are not attending to protest, counter-protest or anti-protest.  We will gather as many available members of the PGR with as many 3 x 5 U. S. Flags to honor CPT Ian P. Weikel, U. S. Army on the day he returns from Iraq, during viewing ceremonies and the final day he is laid to rest.

B. Concept of Operations.  The VA PGR as the lead coordinator, gathers all available members with U.S. Flags at the final rally point (TBD) and conduct (3) three specific internal missions to honor CPT Ian P. Weikel, U. S. Army, 1) MOTORCYCLE ONLY ESCORT for the remains of CPT Ian P. Weikel, U. S. Army from Dover, AFB to the funeral home in Arlington, VA, 2) Conduct a U. S. Flag formation during the viewing ceremonies at the funeral home and 3) MOTORCYCLE & 4-WHEEL ESCORT for the remains of CPT Ian P. Weikel, U. S. Army from the funeral home to his final resting place in Arlington National Cemetery.

C. Tasks

I can hook up with the escort on the MD side of the Bay Bridge. I can't handle a 200 mile round trip for awhile. Having serious leg problems as well as don't want to leave my wife alone all day while dealing with cancer.
As always, I look forward to the honor of escorting a fellow Combat Veteran on their final journey.

We just got home from the Texas portion of this mission.  Ya'll be prepared for the Weikel family - what a testimony of Grace!  They are unbelivable people - faith and love that could move mountains.  They are very appreciative of the PGR and it was our honor to support them today in the Lone Star State!  And I have to give the Army its due on this one, they couldn't have looked sharper with the calling of the role (I hate it when they do that), the gun salute and taps.

Cajun,
Ride will probably come over on US 301 to RT 50 and the Bay Bridge.....pretty much straight shot into the DC/Arlington area from there. Have to coordinate with the other ride captains. Will update after we plot route.
About 115 miles from DAFB to Arlington.

Do we know if we will pick up the escort on Dover AFB, or outside the gate? If we're going on base, it would be good for as many folks as possible to meet the motorcycle safety requirements for DOD installations. ( Dot helmets, eye protection, full fingered gloves, long pants, longsleeve shirts, reflective or brightly colored upper body garment). We need to show them we will abide by the regulations so this won't be an issue for future missions. I also have a DOD sticker on my bike and civilian ID if it will help.

Just to make things clear and there's no misunderstanding...I'm offering my home  to anyone who wants to make a pit stop, freshen up, (bbq, if there's enough interest and time for that), etc.  I know some of you will be on the road for 2-3 hours just to get to Dover.  I'm about 17 miles south of Dover AFB.  However, if the Ride Captains would like to make it official, I'll put it out there for them to consider.
