Well folks, the day is fast approaching for what should be one of the most joyous and rewarding missions we've ever done here in West Virgina with the PGR, other than welcoming home our troops.

For everyone's information, at the staging site, sign-ins will be required with all names to be checked off against our master list.  You will be given an identification badge on a lanyard that is to be displayed at all times.  Sorry but if you don't have a badge you will not be able to participate.  So, if any of you are bringing someone along that is not on the list, get in touch with Gary asap so they can be added.  I sincerely hate to see someone denied the opportunity to participate because they failed to give advance notice.

Once we leave the staging area, we will be followed by a State Trooper who will have clear instructions that nobody is permitted to join or fall in behind the procession.  We currently have about 195 commitments from those wanting to attend plus 25-30 media organizations.  As we agreed to hold the number to around 200 we will be unable to allow anyone to just join in without prior registration.

As a sidenote...the Traveling Liberty Bell will be here for this most honorable occasion.  Although David and Phyllis Hall received a donation from the Texas PGR and Texas ALR, it was nowhere near enough to meet there expenses for this journey.  We will either make available a donation can at the sign-in table or make announcement at the pre-ride briefing for anyone that feels the desire to assist them.

Due to surgery, yesterday, on my wrist and elbow, I will be unable to ride on this mission, however, I will be there on Friday afternoon/early evening in my cage, staying at the Rodeway Inn, Martinsburg.

Everyone, please ride/travel in with extreme caution.  Be ever mindful of the roaming wildlife.  Hope to meet all of you in person!

Remember....WEST VIRGINIA IS A HELMET STATE!
Respects,
Joe

            ********UPDATE********UPDATE********UPDATE********

Our RC, Gary Gaskins, spoke with Mr. Buckles' daughter today and advised her of the vast number of E-MAIL responses he has received from members indicating their intentions to attend this very special occasion.  As of this morning, he has received well over 100 confirmations!

In order to ensure Mr. Buckles is not totally overwhelmed by this mission, Suzannah believes we should make an asserted effort to limit attendance to 200 members.  In order for him to maintain a good count, without having to continually refer back to this thread, I would ask all who have posted their intentions to attend HERE to PLEASE, send an e-mail to Gary at
stroker_ironhead@yahoo.com ASAP so your name can be added to the growing list.  This is the easiest way we have of maintaining a good count.

Gary is going out today in an effort to secure a staging area and police escort to Mr. Buckles' farm in Ranson, WV.

Current plans are for those in attendance to proceed to his farm, with the exception of 10-16 who will remain behind to escort him home.  We feel this will be a very good thing to do for him to ensure he isn't completely overwhelmed when seeing a corridor of flags lining his driveway.  His daughter will let him know there is a surprise for him just prior to the remaining riders picking them up for escort.  The escort will lead him up his driveway and dismount at the home.  Those in the flag line will proceed up to the farm house once the procession has passed.  Attempts are being made to procure some type of transportation as this driveway is approximately one-quarter mile in length.  Bikes will remain parked!  Make sure all in attendance have a kick-stand plate available.  Parking will be on level ground but in a grassy area.

We currently have received interest from ABC's Good Morning America indicating they might like to cover this event as a human interest story.  Should they choose to do so, any other requests will have to be, respectfully, declined.

Again, we regret having to place limits on the number of attendees for this as I'm sure most every American would welcome the opportunity to meet Mr. Buckles but, for HIS welfare, it is felt we should try to hold the number at 200.  We understand, fully, that some who commit may not be able to make it and there will, no doubt, be some in attendance who have not let us know.  Suzannah understands this is a posibility but we have assured her we will do what we can to abide by her wishes.

   Once again,
IF YOU HAVE COMMITTED TO ATTEND ON THIS THREAD, TAKE A MINUTE AND FOLLOW THAT UP WITH A SHORT E-MAIL TO GARY.  THAT IS THE ONLY WAY HE HAS OF MAINTAINING A GOOD NUMBER.

Thank you to everyone for your interest, support and co-operation.
Respects,
Joe

******************CONFIRMATIONS RE-OPENING********************

As of today (Monday), we have received approximately 150 confirmations from members wishing to attend this very special mission to honor Mr. Buckles and we are limiting this to 200 at the request of his sister, Suzannah.

Thus, as we have received requests from other groups to participate along with the PGR, we are re-opening the confirmations until FRIDAY, 10 AUGUST 2007 AT 1700.  After that time, we will notify the other groups of the number of spaces remaining.

Anyone wishing to attend, please notify Gary ASAP at stroker_ironhead@yahoo.com.   Please list your first and last name along with those of anyone else that will be riding with you (no nicknames/usernames, please).  All names will be written down and those in attendance will be asked to sign-in upon arrival so we can compare against the confirmation list he has received.  Please understand that we do not desire to deny anyone the opportunity to meet and visit with Mr. Buckles but we must do whatever we can to abide by the wishes of his family.  As stated before, staging information will not be posted here but, rather, each one indicating they will attend will be given the information via separate e-mail.

We will have a list of motels in the area posted shortly for those desiring to come in the day before or stay over that night.

This will be an awesome mission for a truly honorable American!  Thank you to everyone who has expressed an interest and desire to attend.

Respects,

Joe

**********UPDATE*********UPDATE*********UPDATE***********

CONFIRMATION OF ATTENDANCE IS TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED!!!!

Due to the enormous response Gary has been receiving from our membership announcing their intentions to attend this very special mission, we MUST suspend confirmation temporarily until he has the opportunity to sort through all of them.  As he is trying to juggle work and family while also running this mission, PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY ADDITIONAL CONFIRMATIONS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!!!  Once he has the opportunity to sort and count the number of attendees, if we are still below the 200 limit requested by Mr. Buckles' daughter, we will open this again NLT Monday, August 6, 2007.

For ALL who have announced their intention to attend, a sign-up sheet will be at the staging area and your name will be compared to and checked off against the list Gary is maintaining.  This is being done to ensure all who let him know of their intentions are given the opportunity to participate.

It has also been decided that our staging location will NOT be put out for viewing on this thread.  Instead, those who have indicated their intention to attend will be sent a private e-mail with directions.  While I understand this is totally different from the way we normally do things in the PGR, it is felt this is necessary in an effort to do our best to comply with the wishes of Mr. Buckles' family, which is the normal protocol we follow on a daily basis.  It is hoped all understand this decision.

Respects,
Joe

We have a Special Mission to honor one of the last 3 remaining survivors of World War I, Mr. Frank Buckles, 106, of Martinsburg, WV on 22 Sep 07.

Mr. Buckles began serving in the Army when he was just 16. He was part of the Army Ambulance Service and traveled first to England and then France. He also became an escort for German prisoners of war during World War I. After his military service, he eventually became employed by the steamship industry. He traveled to the Philippines, where he became trapped when the Japanese invaded the country. Buckles spent 3 1/2 years in a Japanese prison camp and was freed, along with 2,147 other prisoners, on Feb. 23, 1945, after a dramatic rescue by the 11th Airborne Division.

What an amazing story Buckles has. He was presented with the French Legion of Honor in 1999, and has received numerous other awards over the course of his long and fruitful life.

We feel it only fitting and proper to show our sincere gratitude to Mr. Buckles while he is still with us.  We have spoke with his daughter who agrees we could spend a couple of hours with him on this very special day.  One of his passions as a younger man was motorcycle riding and she states he would be honored to take another ride in a side-car, if someone attends that has one.

Gary Gaskins, RC from Falling Waters, will be the designated Ride Captain for this very Special Mission.  He will be meeting with Mr. Buckles' daughter this weekend to make further plans.

Please track this thread for updates and make plans to attend this very special mission.

Respects,

Joe

28 Jul 2007 9:32 PM Alert

good evening all, i had a chance to meet this morning with the daughter of mr. frank buckles to discuss what we would like to do on the 22nd of sept. what a nice woman. she met me in the driveway, which is about a 1/4 mile long and we began to dicuss what we as the pgr wanted to do for mr.buckles. we have set a time of 2 pm on september 22, 2007. we will have 2 hrs tops of this gentlemans time. mr.buckles daughter will take him to town so we can set up a flag line up the drive to the house. when he arrives back to the house ( weather pending) he will sit on the porch for a meet and greet type session, the pgr will present him with a plaque and god willing take him on a short motorcycle ride. keep in mind this gentleman is 106 yrs young, we want to honor him not overwhelm him. after working out times and where everyone would be, i was asked if i would like to meet him.guess what my answer was? what a guy!! i thought i would say hi, have a little small talk and be on my way. mr.buckles asked me to sit down and talk with him. 1 1/2 hrs later i got up, this man is living history. i asked him about the motorcycle he rode during the war and he began to tell me a story about his first bike ride. when he was 15 he was walking down the road near his home in missouri when a farmer told him if he helped him on the farm till noon, he could ride his motorcycle.well he worked till noon and then took the bike down the road.he went about 5 miles and ran out of gas, while trying to get it on the stand, and this part is a quote, the damn fell over and i had to wait for someone to come along and help me get it up. this lead to a job in the service driving high ranking officers around. this man has a great memory and a great sence of humor.at the end of our meeting mr.buckles gave me 5 pictures of him in uniform.one of him at age 16 in ft. riley kansas, one of him in the same uniform 50 yrs later. i only wish each and everyone of you were there with me to enjoy this great man and his stories. i will try to get the pictures posted for all of you to enjoy. back to business, i am trying to get some idea of how many pgr members will be able to attend this event, i know it's hard to plan this far ahead but this has had a lot of responce from our members as well as other organizations.so if you could email me at stroker_ironhead@yahoo.com tell me where your from and if you will be able to attend it would make my job a little easier.there might be a cap on the number able to atend, so be as sure as possible about your intent to attend.this is going to be big.i'm working on the staging area and will talk to local police about traffic control. i hope to see a great turnout by my fellow pgr brothers and sisters for this once in a life time opputunity to honor a true american hero...gary

Mr. Buckles,

I wish I could be there but health issues prevent me from traveling that far. It would indeed be an honor to meet you. This would equal the time when, as a young boy, I met one of the last surviving Civil War Veterans. This is a memory that is as vivid as when the event took place.

I salute you, sir and thank you for your service in that terrible war. We always hope there will never be another war but a hundred years later, we are still defending our freedoms. Thank God for men and women like you who will always answer the call.

          **********UPDATE********UPDATE********UPDATE********

Our RC, Gary Gaskins, spoke with Mr. Buckles' daughter today and advised her of the vast number of E-MAIL responses he has received from members indicating their intentions to attend this very special occasion.  As of this morning, he has received well over 100 confirmations!

In order to ensure Mr. Buckles is not totally overwhelmed by this mission, Suzannah believes we should make an asserted effort to limit attendance to 200 members.  In order for him to maintain a good count, without having to continually refer back to this thread, I would ask all who have posted their intentions to attend HERE to PLEASE, send an e-mail to Gary at stroker_ironhead@yahoo.com ASAP so your name can be added to the growing list.

Once again, IF YOU HAVE COMMITTED TO ATTEND ON THIS THREAD, TAKE A MINUTE AND FOLLOW THAT UP WITH A SHORT E-MAIL TO GARY.  THAT IS THE ONLY WAY HE HAS OF MAINTAINING A GOOD NUMBER.

Thank you to everyone for your interest, support and co-operation.
Respects,
Joe
