| I've been a member of the Patriot Guard for almost a year now and never able to attend a mission. This was my first. Let me just say that standing among all of you was one of the deepest honors I have ever had. The procession to Fort Snelling kept a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes watching how it was handled and how everyone stepped up. I will never forget this first mission. The ride home was interesting to say the least, the many emotions that this mission stirred within me. Thank you. |

Ride Report, May 18, 2007: Mission Honoring U.S. Navy Veteran James (Jim) Walseth
It was Luther’s (Jim’s brother) wish to have a few motorcycles join the procession taking Jim from the church to Fort Snelling National Cemetery. The Walseths and some friends of Jim’s were motorcycle enthusiasts and felt this would be a great way to escort Jim to his final resting place. On short notice and with mission changes that started out hourly and progressed to minute to minute, approximately thirty riders (including three new MN PG members) and three cages staged just after noon on Friday to pay respect and to honor U.S. Navy veteran James Walseth. Once the memorial service was complete and guests had a short lunch, we lined up behind Luther’s Harley for the procession to FSNC. Joining the procession on motorcycles and as part of the Patriot Guard, were friends of Jim. A police escort, with a little assistance from seasoned PGR road guards, did a great job of keeping the procession together and moving. Once at FSNC, as the guests were gathering around the shelter where final services would be held, we quickly and efficiently formed a flag line around the shelter. As the services were conducted we were invited to step forward and become part in this service for Jim. It was also fitting that as a contributing member to community of Minnesota, we flew the United States flag that flew over the State Capital and was present to us by Gov. Tim Pawlenty at last years MN PG Rally. As always, we stood tall and proud and most importantly we stood with respect for this fallen hero.
On behalf of the Minnesota Patriot Guard I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Luther Walseth and his family for the privilege to honor James Walseth.
After the services, I was able to talk at length with Patrick, a very close friend of Jim’s. Listening to Pat it is clear that Jim is truly a loss to this community and those he mentored. He continued to serve his community and help others through difficult times in their lives well after his service to our country. My God bless Jim and his family and friends.
Finally, thank you to all who took off the middle of the day during a very busy week for the MN PG to participate in this honor mission. And a hundred times thank you to those who helped me keep the chaos to a minimum (you know who you are).
