Condolances to the family, friends, and comrades of Sp4 Cheri Renner.

Giving blood, signing up for bone marrow and organ donations, and Lions Eye Bank are all ways we can help others, even after we are gone. I have carried a copy of the following poem in my billfold, next to my driver's license, for years.

Bury Only My Faults
Ed Shirley - Huntsville, TX

The day will come when my body will lie upon a white sheet neatly tucked under four corners of a mattress located in a hospital busily occupied with the living and the dying. At a certain moment, a doctor will determine that my brain has ceased to function and, for all practical purposes, my life has stopped.

When that happens, do not attempt to instill artificial life into my body by the use of a machine, and don't call this my death bed. Let it be called the "Bed of Life" and let my body be taken from it to help others lead normal lives.

Give my eyes to the man who has never seen a sunrise, a baby's face, or love in a woman's eyes.

Give my heart to a person whose own heart has caused nothing but endless days of pain.

Give my blood to the teenager who was pulled from the wreckage of her car, so that she may live to see her children play.

Give my kidneys to the one who depends on a machine to exist.

Take my bones, every nerve and muscle in my body, and find a way to make a crippled child walk.

Explore every corner of my brain. Take my cells, if necessary, and let them grow so that, someday, a speechless boy will shout at the crack of a bat and a deaf girl will hear the sound of raindrops against her window.

Burn what is left and scatter my ashes so as to help the flowers grow.

If you must bury something, let it be my faults, my weaknesses, and all my prejudices against my fellow Man.

Give my sins to the devil; give my soul to God.

If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you do all I ask, I will live forever.

We offer our deepest condolences and sympathy to the family and friends of SP4 Cheri Renner. Nothing I can say could lessen the pain you are feeling at this time, but I hope at some point in time you are able to feel some comfort in knowing how many others were mourning your loss and thinking about you. I know her daughter will some day be able to understand how special both her parents are and how important their service is for our country. Her service for our country will not be forgotten. May she now rest in peace.

Rest Safely and Securely in God's Loving Arms, Cheri.

Going home, going home,
I'm just going home.
Quiet-like, slip away-
I'll be going home.
It's not far, just close by;
Jesus is the Door;
Work all done, laid aside,
Fear and grief no more.
Friends are there, waiting now.
He is waiting, too.
See His smile! See His hand!
He will lead me through.

May your family and all who loved you find comfort. I think of the words of a poet friend, a Vietnam Veteran, who penned these words:

"I am a whisper found
In the wind of questions flow
Too much too soon is faded
From the land where answers grow

Turn up the sky one corner
Take care to nurture the course
And find me just a marvel
That shines with no remorse"

God Bless and keep you until that Day of Great Reunion
