Johanna Berlin is believed to be Minnesota's oldest veteran. We have been requested to attend her funeral services tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 25th. George Winslow will be the Ride Captain for this mission, and will update this thread with staging information later today. Patriot Guard Riders will meet sometime around 10-10:30 a.m. in Lakefield - the staging location is yet to be determined. The time may change as well, so please monitor this thread for updates from George. This is Ms. Berlin's obituary, as it appears in the Worthington Globe: JOHANNA AUGUSTA BERLIN, 108, of Lakefield, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at Royal C. Johnson Veterans Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D. Born Jan. 25, 1898 in Berlin, Germany, she was the daughter of Herman and Augusta (Lehman) Berlin. She came to America with her family in 1911 and settled on a farm in Heron Lake Township, Jackson County. She attended nursing school at Chicago Hospital and graduated in 1935 as a registered nurse. She later attended the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. She enlisted in the U.S. Army Jan. 20, 1943, and trained at Camp Pickett, Va., going on to Yuma, Ariz., for desert training. She was stationed in Hawaii, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, Johnson Island and Tokyo. She ended her military career while serving in Guam and was discharged June 5, 1948, as a captain. Following her service, she enrolled at the University of Minnesota and became a nurse in anesthetics. She retired in the early 1960s and resided in the Lakefield area. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and the Swen-Rasmussen American Legion Post No. 4, Lakefield. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hansen Funeral Home, Lakefield, and from 12 to 1 p.m Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Heron Lake Township, Jackson County. The service will be 1 p.m. Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Bart Mueller officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, Delafield Township, Jackson County. -- Monica Mead Patriot Guard Riders MN State Co-Captain

To the friends and family of Johanna Berlin, my condolences on the loss of a great lady and true hero. Hearing how at 35 she enlisted in the Army Nursing Core because she wanted to repay her adopted homeland for everything it had given her (earned from her own hard work and determination). How active she was with the VFW and AL through out the years, supporting those veterans who came after her. I wish I had had the opportunity to meet her and listen to her tell of her life in her own words.

It is an honor to be invited by the family to pay our respects to this great American hero.

My lady and I were privileged to be among the dozen PGR members who were able to attend this mission. Here is a photo link:

I'm sure no one who attended today's funeral for Capt. Johanna Berlin (ret) and heard the pastor's message, has any doubt about the faith of this lady, who is now home with our Lord.

Avatar picture taken at Hector, Mn., Municipal Airport, where a T33 was erected in memory of my first cousin and best friend, Capt Robert C. Swanson, USAF, who died in service to his country in 1978, and in whose memory I ride with the PGR, to honor all who have served our nation.

What an amazing honor it is that we have been able to learn of another
American Hero.  Thank you Captain Johanna Berlin for your service to our country.
My family and I are eternally grateful to you for your service to our Great Nation.
No greater love has anyone than this than to give of their life selflessly.  Thank you!
What an amazing example of an immigrant who wanted to be an American and then became one.  May it be an example to many in this day.
God bless the family and friends of Johanna Berlin.  May you always remember her
wonderful life of service.

There is no telling what can be accomplished when no one cares who gets the credit.
