updated 10 AUG 08 1838 pdt by Zippy

This “short notice” mission will take place on Tuesday, August 12th. Visitation is from 1200-1400, followed by the funeral service at 1400. The family will arrive at 1100, so we need to be in place prior to that time. For those wishing to leave the Charleston area together, I will be at the Seven/Eleven convenience store, adjacent to the capitol around 0915. The store is located just off the Greenbrier St exit on I64/I77 (exit 99); when you see the capitol dome, get off the interstate and go towards it. Seven/Eleven is at the bottom of the hill. We will depart no later than 0930, please be fueled up and ready to roll by that time…please be prompt, a grieving family is counting on us.

I would like for everyone to be at the staging location by 1030, in order to have the flag line in place prior to 1100. If you cannot be there that early, come whenever you can. If arriving later, park as quietly as you can at the staging location, then walk to the backside of the funeral home and join us in the flag line. At this time, the weather looks to be nice and sunny, so please come prepared with sunscreen, water, hat, etc.

Please remember to bring your 3x5 flags. Anyone who can fly a flag from their bike or cage is encouraged to come prepared to do so, as we will be escorting from the funeral home to the cemetery. If you have questions, contact Buddy (RC) by phone or email. Home # 304-984-0104, cell 304-610-1324.

**** Short Notice, Confirmed Mission of Honor for Alvin L. Fink, Ansted, WV ****

Final date/times have not been determined as of yet, so continue to monitor this thread for updated information.

The Patriot Guard Riders have been invited to stand up a mission of honor for Mr. Alvin L. Fink, US Army veteran from the WWII-era; Mr. Fink passed away today, August 9th. His family has requested PGR participation at the visitation/service, and burial. The visitation, funeral service, and burial will all take place on the same day; exact date/time is unknown at this time. We will stand up a flag line for the visitation, take a short break during the funeral service, then provide escort to the cemetery, as well as a final flag line when we arrive there. Since we are providing escort, I hope to have some bikes capable of flying flags. If you cannot come on a bike, please remember that cages are always welcome.

The funeral home is Wallace & Wallace, located at 106 Holly St, Ansted,
WV (or Holley...I've seen it both ways). Holly Street is right off Rt 60 in Ansted, directly across from the Subway restaurant. If coming from the west, Holly Street is on your right, if coming from the east, its on your left. The cemetery is Restlawn Memorial Gardens, and is located 2.5 miles east of Ansted on Rt 60.

The staging location will be the Ansted Baptist Church parking lot, which is also on Holly St. As you come straight in Holly St., go 100 feet past the funeral home, and you will be at the staging location. Parking at the staging location and cemetery is paved, no grass, gravel, or dirt. Ansted is about 50 miles east of Charleston on Rt 60...CAUTION...for those who may not be familiar with this road, it gets VERY twisty once you pass the town of Gauley Bridge and begin climbing Gauley Mountain. Please exercise caution, and ride safely.

Ride Captain for this mission of honor is Buddy Palla, assisted by co-captain Pat Hannifin.

We mourn the loss of yet another member of “The Greatest Generation”. It’s because of the sacrifices of the past, so unselfishly rendered by heroes like Mr. Alvin Fink, that we have the freedoms our nation enjoys today. May the friends and loved ones of "Paw-Paw" stand proudly, knowing thousands of patriots across this country are very appreciative of those who have stepped up over the years, to defend America. Well done, Sir! I will continue to keep your family in my prayers in the days ahead. They are very special people, and I know God will provide the comfort and strength they need at this time.

Thank you for my freedom Mr Fink. May you rest in peace. “Some people’s lives can truly make a difference however long or short their lives on earth. They give the gifts of kindness and of caring. They sow the seeds of friendship and self-worth. Some people’s lives are beautiful examples of putting others first, and when they are gone, the lives of those they touched are so much richer, and the love they shared lives on and on.”

Another loss, another time for sadness here, another time for joy over there. Another hero gone, another void that won't be filled. Another day to live free, because of Alvin L. Fink. Thank you sir. Thank you for your life, your service and for the freedom that I have to sit here, in the comfort of my home, because you helped keep it that way.

May God be with your family in this time of sorrow, and give them peace and strength to go on. I cannot be at the service to give you honor in person, and thank the family who had the privelige of knowing you for so many years. But I will be there in spirit, and will be sending prayers as well.
