South Carolina lost another hero in the Global War On Terrorism supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Khowst Province, Afghanistan.

SSG Collin Bowen, a Marion, SouthCarolina native and 1988 graduate of Marion High School, died early Friday at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. SSG Bowen was injured in the same IED attack that killed Welford, SC native SGT Shawn Hill of the 178th Engineer Battalion, 218th Infantry Brigade, South Carolina Army National Guard on January 2, 2008. We had the Honor of standing for SGT Hill and his Family, now SGT Hill has a Battle Buddy.

Please keep this grieving Family in your thoughts and prayers, and post your condolences and let them know that SSG Collin Bowen made the ultimate sacrifice for us, and we will not forget him.

SSG Bowen, 38, had been hospitalized at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas there since suffering injuries in the explosion.

“Collin passed away peacefully early Friday morning with his family holding his hands at his bedside,” Collin’s brother Justin wrote on the online journal started in Collin’s honor. “May he rest in peace.”

SSG Bowen was returning to base in the Khost province of Afghanistan after what was his final mission in the country Jan. 2. His vehicle was part of a convoy of Afghani and U.S. military vehicles. The convoy was attacked by a remote-activate bomb. It is believed his U.S. vehicle was singled out from the Afghani vehicles in the convoy.

This is a horrible thing for a Family-to have their loved one come home and fight for life for months-and lose the Battle. I can’t imagine the pain they are suffering. You can read the journal of SSG Bowen at: www.collinbowen.com/updates.html

Service arrangements will be announced shortly. Stand by.

Here is a piece of the journal that explains the PGR flag below:

Saturday, February 16th

...Gary and Gayle -The Quilt Lady- came to visit today. They brought their love and caring, as well as 24 CD's full of music for Collin, and this flag from the Patriot Guard Riders signed by 150 riders.

I wasn't very familiar with communities of riders. Collin always liked bikes, but we never talked much about it. Last year, all the sudden, Collin calls me one day from Afghanistan and tells me... You know, Harley-Davidson has a great deal on bikes for soldiers in Active Duty overseas. .... I never thought or really knew of your support to our troops.

Patriot Guard Riders, Thank you for your support!... Ursula Bowen

My family and I send our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of this true American Hero. I was made aware of Collins injuries by a fellow Soldiers' Angel and have been following your online journal. I have been praying for a miracle, and although it was not the answer I was looking for, a miracle did occur... Collin is no longer in pain, he is in heaven with our Lord. Take comfort in knowing that now you have a very special guardian angel to watch over you as he watched over his country in life.

SSG Collin Bowen, rest easy now, your fight is over...

Memorial Day
Sacrifice is meaningless without remembrance. America's collective consciousness demands that all citizens recall and be aware of the deaths of their fellow countrymen during wartime. Far too often, the nation as a whole takes for granted the freedoms all Americans enjoy. Those freedoms were paid for with the lives of others few of us actually knew. That's why they are all collectively remembered on one day.

Rest Safely and Securely in God's Loving Arms, Collin.

Going home, going home,
I'm just going home.
Quiet-like, slip away-
I'll be going home.
It's not far, just close by;
Jesus is the Door;
Work all done, laid aside,
Fear and grief no more.
Friends are there, waiting now.
He is waiting, too.
See His smile! See His hand!
He will lead me through.

Morning Star lights the way;
Restless dream all done;
Shadows gone, break of day,
Life has just begun.
Every tear wiped away,
Pain and sickness gone;
Wide awake there with Him!
Peace goes on and on!
Going home, going home,
I'll be going home.
See the Light! See the Sun!
I'm just going home.
