19 Jul 2007 7:13 PM Alert

Updated on 20 Jul 07 at 2025 MST

We have been asked to escort these soldiers from the Colorado Jet Center to Fort Carson by some very important higher ups at Fort Carson.

I am asking for maximum turnout. For those of you unaware, these soldiers do not have family members here at Fort Carson to greet them, and the PGR has consistently been the majority of the audience! It would be WONDERFUL if the number of Patriot Guard Riders outnumber the number of soldiers returning! Let's show them how a Welcome Home is done!!!!!

We have been cleared for 10 personnel to be on the flight line to greet the soldiers as they depart the plane, and then escort them, along with the Fort Carson MP's, through Gate 1. I already have six people on the list, and need another four, preferrably on bikes. I need to submit the list of names NLT noon tomorrow, so if you are interested, please call 719.466.1133. I will be up until about midnight, so if you're interested, please call!!!!

Staging for the escort contingent will be in the parking lot of the Colorado Jet Center will be at 6:45pm.

For the rest of us, we will stage at Fort Carson Gate 1 at 7:30pm, and have the flag line set up by 7:50pm, ready for the busses to roll through at 8:00pm. I will be in contact with someone at Gate 1 in the event that the busses will roll through earlier so the flag line will definitely be in place. Am awaiting confrimation for the RC for Carson's leg of this mission, so standby for further info.

This Welcome Home will NOT be at the Special Events Center on Fort Carson, but at Provider Chapel.

Denver Metro area and Northern Colorado.

I will be caging down to this mission.

Staging for the ride/drive down will be in Castle Rock at the Walgreen's parking lot on Wilcox St. As you are going south on I-25, take Exit #181, the Plum Creek Exit. Turn left and go under the highway, and take the first possible left into the Walgreen's. If you make it to the stoplight at Wilcox St, you went too far!

Staging ------- 1700 (5:00 pm)
Ride Briefing - 1715 (5:15 pm)
KSU ------------ 1730 (5:30 pm SHARP)

Remember that we will be entering Ft. Carson, so be sure you have all necessary items on and with you. See below.

Colorado State Captain

___________________________________________________________________________

We have been invited to a Welcome Home mission at Ft. Carson on 22 Jul 07. This Welcome Home is for 72 Soldiers from The 150th Army Aviation Battalion of the West Virginia National Guard

The Welcome Home service will be held at Provider Chapel on Ft. Carson at 2130 (9:30 pm)

Staging for this mission (for now) will be at 2000 (8:00 pm) at Gate 1 at Peterson AFB to welcome the Soldiers and escort the busses back to Ft. Carson.

There is also a distinct possibility that we will be allowed out onto the flightline on Peterson to meet the plane. If this happens, we will probably stage at 1900 (7:00 pm), or earlier, to be ready to meet the plane when it lands at 1930 (7:30 pm)

Ride Captain for this mission will be Kristen Coderre

Be prepared to ride/drive on Peterson AFB and on Ft. Carson. If you do not have a DOD pass, riders will need to have long pants, long sleeve shirt, over-the-ankle footwear, full-fingered leather gloves, helmet, goggles (or face shield on helmet. Regular sun-glasses are not enough) yellow or orange reflective belt or vest, drivers license, vehicle registration, and proof-of-insurance.
Drivers without a DOD pass will need drivers license, vehicle registration, and proof-of-insurance.

All vehicles are subject to search!

Kristen & Brad....please accept my sincere apologies for not posting here sooner!!

Folks, COLORADO ROCKS!!!!  What you are doing for these men and women is going completely above and beyond the call!

While we have a "very special" Welcome Home planned for their return to Wild & Wonderful West Virginia, one I'm sure they're aware of, being greeted as they set foot on American soil for the first time in over a year will most assuredly bring a huge lump in ALL their throats, just as it did mine when reading of your plans.

This unit had just completed 13 months of deployment to the Sandbox, flying missions daily, with absolutely NO casualties or loss of aircraft!  That is totally awesome (and a blessing)!

From all of us here in West Virginia, please extend a heartfelt "Thank You" to all your members and a hearty "HOORAH" for what you're doing!!!
With Deepest Respects,
Joe

DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO THE COLORADO JET CENTER FROM DENVER OR PUEBLO:

Take I-25 to exit 139, Hancock Expressway; watch your speed, as both off ramp turns get a little tight. Follow Hancock Expressway (which becomes Fountain Boulevard) east across town. Major streets you will cross are Academy & Powers (See first map).

After crossing Powers, turn right at the first chance you get. If you end up in the loop, you've gone too far. (See second map).

DRIVING DIRECTIONS IN COLORADO SPRINGS:

Take Academy or Powers to Fountain, turn east on Fountain. Remaining directions are the same as above. Safe rides/drives to all. See you there.

To the 42 PGR members who sacrificed the better half of their Sunday afternoon/evening to attend this short notice mission, I thank you from the bottom of my humbled heart.

Through every curve ball thrown from left field, you guys were quick to adapt and overcome to ensure these 69 hero's from West Virginia were welcomed home in the manner each and every soldier who has served our country deserves!!

Thank you to the group out on the flightline, who shook hands and/or hugged each and every soldier that departed that plane. Not only did it mean the world to the soldiers, but to me as well. (Next time I promise I'll have the right shoes!!!!)

Jim, thanks for being so flexible this evening. We were definitely shooting from the hip, and your actions made it seem seamless! To each of you on the flag line holding a flag for these heros to walk though, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I received so many heartfelt thank you's from these heroes it was humbling. Many of them expressed how that walking through those flags were the coolest thing they'd done. I also received many compliements in regards to our escort from the Jet Center to post. So many soldiers were astonished that we'd taken time out of our day/night to do that for them. Several of them told me that they wished that every welcome home could be like that. Guess what? I am going to do my damndest to make that happen. The folks at the Jet Center extended an open invitation to each and every flight of deploying soldiers, whether its sending them off or welcoming them home. I think that sentiment solidifies that we are doing the right thing!!!!

1SG Jenkins, the 1SG from 1st MOB here in the Springs asked to ride with us today, and said that it was the coolest ride he'd ever done and can't wait to do another with us!

COL Jarowski, CSM Daly and CPT Pyatt all expressed their heartfelt thank you's to us. Without us, there would have only been 5 people at Provider Chapel to welcome these heroes back on American soil. Thank you, thank you thank you!

Being in the back of the escort from the Jet Center, I was in tears of gratitude until we got on post. I cannot express how amazing each and every one of you are, how awesome the escort was, there are simply no words.

Before the busses departed, I went on each of them and again told them "Welcome Home" from all of us of the PGR, and passed on the sentiments of Joe, WV's PGR State Captain that if they thought this Welcome Home was great, that WV PGR had something better in store. The cheers were so loud in both busses that it was shaking. Completely and totally AWESOME.

West Virginia, you'll have you guys back soon, we hope Colorado did you proud. Passing them on to you!

Again, to all of you who were here tonight, in person or in spirit, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!

Kristen, and ALL of Colorado, as I sit here reading your post on this Welcome Home, I have goose bumps covering, literally, every square inch of me (and if y'all knew me, you'd know that's a LOT of goose bumps!!!).  I can only try to imagine the looks on the faces and joy in the hearts of our American Heroes as they saw the ceremonious return they were about to receive.

THANK YOU COLORADO!  You have done every PGR member proud by your selfless act of pulling this off on short notice.  We here in West Virginia cannot be more thankful for providing some of America's finest the Heroe's Welcome they have earned and deserve.  We will make every effort, here, to be "icing on the cake YOU have already baked".

I salute each of you for doing this!

If any took photos of their return, unless you plan to submit for posting, please forward on to me for inclusion in our mission photos.  Thank you again!
Respects,
Joe

THANK YOU to all those who greeted our Soldiers last night.  My husband was one of them.  I hated the thought that our guys weren't going to be greeted by anyone when they arrived in CO and when he call me last night and said that the Patroit Guard was there to greet them it made a great day even better.    Thank you all again for all your patriotism.

Thanks to everyone ... and especially to the 150th of the WVARNG. When those guys stood up and applauded us I got a king-size lump in my throat. This one was really special in a lot of ways to me.

By the way, I believe the new National Guard slogan is "One weekend a month, my ass!"
