18 Sep 2006 7:34 PM Alert

24 SEP 06 – NAVY PIER – CHICAGO, IL – ILLINOIS’ GOLD STAR MOTHERS RECOGNITION DAY MISSION

Patriot Guard Riders, the day is almost upon us and I have the details.  On 24 September 2006, the State of Illinois will honor the “Gold Star Mothers” of Illinois.

Shortly after World War I the Gold Star Mothers Club was formed in the United States to provide support for mothers that lost sons or daughters in the war. The name came from the custom of families of servicemen hanging a banner called a Service Flag in the window of their homes. The Service Flag had a star for each family member in the military. Living servicemen were represented by a Blue Star, and those who had lost their lives were represented by a gold star.

Today, membership in the Gold Star Mothers is open to any American woman whose child has died in the line of duty of the United States Armed Forces. Stepmothers and adoptive mothers are eligible for membership under certain circumstances.

Just as when it was founded, the Gold Star Mothers continues to concentrate on providing emotional support to its members, doing volunteer work with veterans in general and veteran's hospitals in particular, and generally fostering a sense of patriotism and respect for members of the Armed Forces.

The Patriot Guard Riders have been requested to provide escort services for these families during their Recognition Day.

As such, the Patriot Guard Riders will ride into Chicago, IL on 24 September 2006 and honor these families.  It is requested that each PGR member be dresses as usual for a mission however, we will be standing in the presence of the families that have given so much to this country.  Be looking your best.  Wash your bikes and cars.  Make sure your flags are clean and in proper order.  There will never be a better opportunity for us to pay our respects.

The Sergeant Majors of the Army and Marine Corp will also be present.

Location:  Navy Pier

                  600 East Grand Ave.

                  Chicago, IL 60611

Map: See Below

Link: http://www.navypier.com/

Rally Point:  North end of Navy Pier – on E. Grand Ave.

Rally Point Time:  Be at the pier, ready to go at 11:30 - 12:00 pm.

Details:  We will have 2 flag lines formed prior to 12:30 pm, which will provide an “Honor Wall” as the Gold Star Mothers step off the busses.  Riders that arrive the earliest will be given a nametag, which has the name of one of our fallen heroes (there will be a limited number of honor tags).

Additional notes:  If you would like to pay your respects to Illinois' 139 fallen heroes and their families, I invite you to sign a book of condolence that will be available in the first-floor rotunda of the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago from Monday, Sept. 11 through Friday, Sept. 22. The condolence book, along with portraits of those who have lost their lives, will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

TRANSPORTATION:  We have gained permission to park on Navy Pier (not the norm).  All Patriot Guard Riders should have their best appearance on this day.  Flags and messages of Patriotism, Honor and Respect.  This is open to ALL PGR members.  There are no state boundaries or vehicle requirements.

Count me in.   Can anyone tell me where to pick up a grommet tool?  My flag needs a little reinforcing.  I haven't been able to fly it at highway speed for fear it will rip off.

JP - I have a grommet tool. It's not great, but for $2.89 at Ace Hardware it's not that bad either. Call me at 630-400-3055 and we can arrange for you to come by for a "grommet party".

As for the mission for Gold Star Moms, Trish and I are definitely down for that, no question. No one has given more and we'd go anywhere, any time to honor them.

Chris, let me know if I can help in any way.

Respectfully,

John

JP - any hardware store will have them. The end result isn't the perfect pretty grommets like from a mfg. But they are functional. I always add one center grommet to all my highway flags. It really seems to help alot. I flew two 3x5's from Chicago to Aledo and back... no problem. Wauconda to downtown Chicago and back... no problem. I have to replace the flag about every third mission... but that's just the way it goes.

Again... riding down from Wauconda / Lake Zurich / Crystal Lake etc area if anyone wants to join up.

Tigger - Will be great as always to see you again!!
Coastie - Same goes for you brother!!

JP -

Try Menards (or Home Depot or Lowes or ACE) for a grommet tool.  I know Menards has them since that's where I bought mine.

Walmart has one with a cutter, makes a perfert circle, for about $5. I tried the less expensive ones but if you can not make a good cut, hole, they tear.

I work in Saint Charles, let me know and you are welcomed to use it.

Chris,
I will be honored to be part of the PGR Honor Wall of flags at Navy pier for the Gold Star Mothers Recognition Day. Nobody has given as much towards the defense of freedom as the Gold Star Mothers. Is it permissable for me to bring my wife along as she would like to pay tribute to the Gold Star Mothers as well? I'm looking forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Sad to say

Tiggerflying in the big red cage and "Bambi's Mate" (a big Buck) had an undesirable head on today. I saw the brown flash and knew in an instant what was going to happen. The State Police found his mate and saved her before she met the same fate. Why those two were running around I55 at 2 in the afternoon is beyond all of us.

I was truly sad, this is a first for me in my 40+ years of driving and I come from the country.

Needless to say the big red cage is missing all the front lights, grill, radiator, bumper and part of my hood is squashed, parts of each side of the 4x4 are missing and tomorrow I will find out the rest of the story.

I am fine.

Will probably not get all the damage repaired in time to make the mission on Sunday and I don't drive the sports car into Chicago. With regrets for this time, but she'll be back and running again in no time.
