The family of William Burtner , has invited the Patriot Guard to stand in his honor and escort the procession as he is taken to Abraham Lincoln Cemetery. William was a Viet Nam veteran who served in the US Army from 1968 until 1973.  Mr. Burtner has been active at  VFW post  2580 for the last 25 years, serving as commander from 2001 to 2006 then again starting in 2007 until his death.  Friends say that William's newest passion was  to put together care packages for the soldiers, he had  also volunteered to be on the newly formed veterans committee in Midlothian. William was happy to have the post host a fundraiser to sponsor Honor Flight Chicago, his hope was to raise enough money to send WW11 veterans from Midlothian to visit the WW11 Memorial in Washington, D.C.  Sadly, Mr. Burtner was attacked while going to deposit funds recently  raised at the VFW post that were gathered to support his Honor Flight commitment.

To those I love and to those who loved me:
When I am gone, release me, let me go.
I have so many things to see and do.
You must not tie yourself to me with tears
Be thankful for our beautiful years.

I gave to you my love you can only guess,
How much you gave to me in happiness,
I thank you for the love you each have shown,
But now it's time I traveled alone.

So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must.
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It's only for a time that we must part
So, bless the memories within your heart.

I won't be far away, for life goes on
So if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near
All my love around you soft and clear
And then, when you must come this way alone,
I'll greet you with a smile and say,
"Welcome Home"
