The picture below was sent by John's son Jeff along with the attached explaination.

I wish I would have thought of this before today, but anyhow, do you have the capability
to download the attached photo of my Dad into his posting description? It was taken in
Heidelberg 1945. He was quite proud of this picture. (I'm sure you know how the stories go; "here stands the 20 year old bad-a$$ soldier, Big Bad John.") As far back that I can recall, I never tired of listening in awe and honor of Dad's military stories. I may have heard many of them hundreds of times over and over, but each time was just as fascinating as the first.
Thanx,
Jeff

My family and I wish to send our condolences to the family and friends of John Branchick. You are a HERO to our country for standing for our freedom so that we may have the liberties that we enjoy everyday. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. You will NEVER be forgotten.

Our prayers and well wishes go out to your family as they try to get through this grievous time.

____________________________________________________________

For this country, this Warrior has stood the watch.

While some of us were in our beds at night, this Warrior stood the watch.

While some of us were in school learning our trade, this Warrior stood the watch.

Yes, even before some of us were born into this world ... this Warrior stood the watch.

In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen brewing on the horizon of history this Warrior stood the watch.

Many times he would cast an eye home and see his family standing there ... needing his guidance and help ... needing that hand to hold during those hard times ... but he still stood the watch.

He stood the watch for years, He stood the watch so that we, our families, and our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety each and every night knowing that a Warrior stood the watch.

Today we are here to say “Friend, the watch stands relieved. Relieved by those you have led, guided, and trained. You stand relieved. We have the watch.”

GOD BLESS!

We mourn the loss of yet another member of “The Greatest Generation”. It’s because of the sacrifices of the past, so unselfishly rendered by heroes like John Branchick, that we have the freedoms our nation enjoys today. May the friends and loved ones of John stand proudly, knowing thousands of patriots across this country are very appreciative of those who have stepped up over the years, to defend America. Well done, Sir!

We salute you , My Friend

Final Inspection

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now,soldier.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime.
When the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord.
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don’t, I’ll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now,soldier
you’ve borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets;
you’ve done your time in Hell."

My thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of T/5 John Branchick on the passing of this True American Hero. And my sincere appreciation for his service to this country and the cause of freedom that my family will never take for granted. The men who served under General Patton will always be remembered as being among the most elite forces the world has ever seen, and this country and the entire free world owes them a debt that can never be repaid. Take comfort in the knowledge that the men of the 3rd are in a special place in heaven. May he rest in eternal honored peace.

It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.
