Post Mission Report
We staged at Bob Dron’s Harley Dealership in Oakland at 1130. Sgt. Busse’s father, Mike was there to greet us. We talked to him and explained just what we would be doing and how we did it. Mike was ecstatic. He said he hadn’t seen his son in almost 14 months. This young man was with the Big Red One and disarmed IEDs. We KSU at 1200 for the airport. As we walked into the terminal, we found out the plane landed early and people were already coming off. Before our Sgt. came off, we had a bonus. A young female soldier (unknown rank/name) came down the stairs. We came to attention and saluted her. You could see her trying to maintain her composure. Finally Sgt Nicholas Busse came down the stairs. We came to attention and presented arms. Problem was Nicolas and his dad Mike hugged and wouldn’t let go off each other. Actually, that was not a problem but a wonderful site to see. Sgt. Busse wasn’t sure what to do so his dad told him to walk down the line. We rendered our honors then got around him to welcome him home. While there, we met a Marine who served during Korea. He had asked to stand with us. Well, we didn’t have a Thank You pin, but we did have a Mission Accomplished Pin that Cranky took off his vest. Moose, a Korean War Vet, spent some time talking with him. We then left to stage for the second part of our mission, the escort home. After Mike and Sgt. Busse joined us, we left for their home in Petaluma. When we got to the street and came around the corner, family and friends were waiting and our horns were blasting and engines reving. We let everyone know our “package” had arrived. We all dismounted and after all the family and friends greeted Sgt. Busse, Panak, an Army Viet Nam Vet, presented him with our Thank You pin. Then Sgt. Busse had to pay us. Payment required, a picture with all the riders that escorted him home.
