The Patriot Guard has been asked to attend the memorial for Marine Chief Warrant Officer 4 Jim McDonald.  Jim passed away earlier this week after a long battle with cancer.  A 30 plus year veteran of the Marine Corps, the Gunner spent part of his years on active duty and part as a reserve here in the Bay Area.  Gunner was involved, in the late '50's/early '60's with transporting and guarding our atomic weapons, as well as witnessing some of the tests.  Gunner Mac, along with many others from those years, contracted cancer probably due to exposure to the radiation.  Several years ago, most started receiving a 10% disability rating for "skin cancer".

We will stage at the Chevron, 37011 Fremont Blvd, Fremont, CA at 9:15 AM (0915).

http://tinyurl.com/myo5md

We will KSU at 9:45 AM (0945) to the Fremont Memorial Chapel, 3723 Peralta Ave, Fremont, Ca

http://tinyurl.com/oj77jb

and establish a flag line to transfer the Gunner to his transportation, and along with family, provide a PGR escort to the St Edward's Church, 5788 Thornton Ave, Newark, Ca and reestablish the Flag line to transfer Gunner into the church.

http://tinyurl.com/lsnd2x

After the service, we will again have a flag line for his transfer back to his vehicle, and escort him back to Fremont Memorial Chapel, where he will remain until departing for his burial in Arlington National Cemetery.

Please note that for those that wish, there is a "viewing" Thursday and Friday Nites, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM (1600 - 2000) at the Fremont Memorial Chapel.

Karon and I would like to offer our most sincere condolences and prayers to the family and friends of Jim McDonald USMC .

Please rest assured that Gunner has now reported to his new duty station and, as the last verse of the Marine Corps Hymn says, is now "Guarding The Streets of Heaven".

“If the Army and the Navy ever look on Heaven’s scenes,
they will find the streets are guarded by United States
Marines”.

Rest well my brother Marine.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of CWO4. Jim McDonald, USMC (RET) Veteran. May God help you though this difficult time and sorrow. He is one of America's Heroes that will never be forgotten.

Rest Safely and Securely in God's Loving Arms, Jim.

Going home, going home,
I'm just going home.
Quiet-like, slip away-
I'll be going home.
It's not far, just close by;
Jesus is the Door;
Work all done, laid aside,
Fear and grief no more.
Friends are there, waiting now.
He is waiting, too.
See His smile! See His hand!
He will lead me through.

Morning Star lights the way;
Restless dream all done;
Shadows gone, break of day,
Life has just begun.
Every tear wiped away,
Pain and sickness gone;
Wide awake there with Him!
Peace goes on and on!
Going home, going home,
I'll be going home.
See the Light! See the Sun!
I'm just going home.

Thank you for your service CWO4 McDonald. May you rest in peace.

“Some people’s lives can truly make a difference however long or short their lives on earth. They give the gifts of kindness and of caring. They sow the seeds of friendship and self-worth. Some people’s lives are beautiful examples of putting others first, and when they are gone, the lives of those they touched are so much richer, and the love they shared lives on and on.”

I had the very distinct honor of meeting and riding escort for Gunner Mac to his home in Clear Lake. What a wonderful man and even being as sick as he was, he was so full of life that day. If there was a joke to be told, he told it. If there was laughing in the room, he had either instigated it or was belly laughing at someone else's joke. I knew then that when it was his time to leave this earth, I would be there to pay my respects to a great man. Semper Fi Gunny, go now and rest.

I had the privilege and honor to meet Gunner McDonold at the Palo Alto VA BBQ about a month ago, and I was very impressed with the man, and the impact that he's had on so many folks. I was doubly blessed with the honor of being able to take part in the flag line and escort for his memorial. The amount of people who came to show their respect spoke volumes and the impact he had on them was so evident. As someone said earlier "Heavens Streets" are a bit safer tonight. God Bless, James

I was asked to post this by a Marine that did not have access -

Please add my paragraph to the Gunner's book as one of the many who will miss him profoundly.

I am currently assigned as the Operations, Plans Officer for a United Nations force of 10,000 in Liberia. In this Area of Operation, there are only 9 Americans including two Marines. In spite of the odds, I arrived to the mission with a reputation to uphold. I am honored by the admiration and respect for the very uniform I wear. Many people here ask me "what is it that makes Marine's different?" Gunner Mac 's enduring discipline, his humbleness and his pride, his strong sense of brotherhood, and Esprit de Corps exemplify the differences that make us stand out and has allowed us to maintain our traditions for well over two centuries. He has had a personal and profound affect on so many of his former brothers in uniform as we have scattered around the world. However, in large part because of him, the distance and passage of time have not eroded the bonds we made while serving our country, they have in fact grown. For this and his dear friendship, I am profoundly grateful.

Semper Fi Gunner Mac. You will be missed but not forgotten.

Post Mission Report
We staged at the Chevron on the corner of Fremont Blvd and Thornton Ave. We discussed the mission and how we would run everything. Since we had enough bikes we decided to include a Missing Man Formation in the escort. We gathered for the Mission Briefing. First thing we did was get 5 volunteers for the Missing Man Formation. We needed a Marine, Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard veteran. We got one of each for the formation. Then we got Road Guard volunteers. After explaining our mission and what we were going to do, we mounted up and headed for the Mortuary. We waited until services were over and set up our Flag Line. We proceeded to take Gunner Mac to the church for final services. We had two flag bikes in the lead followed by our Missing Man formation in front of the Hearse. The rest of the bikes followed by all the family cars and the PGR cars. Some of us went into the church for the services. The rest of us waited outside until the services were over. At that time we lined up again to escort Gunner Mac back to the Mortuary. The escort back was as impressive as the escort to the church. It was done with the utmost respect and honor for this man who served his country for many years. Back at the Mortuary, Gunner’s wife, May, asked the PGR to attend a reception. Several of us were able to attend.
