The Patriot Guard has the Honor of being invited to stand at the services for Capt. Mark R. McDowell, who lost his life in the harsh land of Afghanistan. His F-15E had a mechanical failure, and he and Capt. Thomas J. Gramith were killed in the ensuing crash. The two were assigned to the 336th Fighter Squadron, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C.
Capt. McDowell's family home is in the northwest part of South Carolina, in the small town of Tamassee in Oconee County. The road that leads to his family's house in this small town has a yellow ribbon at the entrance to mark his families wait for his return.
His Mother said that Mark was born to serve, and one he had developed in high school, and that she thought he could survive whatever was thrown at him. She and her family only got to see him fly one time, and that was the day he deployed to Afghanistan.
Mrs. Thomas said that Mark believed in what he was doing, believed in serving others, and that he would not take a minute back.
Capt. McDowell's memorial service is on Saturday, July 25, at Salem United Methodist Church. His Final Formation will occur at Arlington National Cemetery later this fall, when 336th Fighter Squadron returns from Combat.

DoD Identifies Air Force Casualties
The Department of Defense announced today the deaths of two airmen who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. They died July 17 in a F-15E crash near Ghazni Province, Afghanistan.
Killed were:
Capt. Thomas J. Gramith, 27, of Eagan, Minn. He was assigned to the 336th Fighter Squadron, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C.
Capt. Mark R. McDowell, 26, of Colorado Springs, Colo. He was assigned to the 336th Fighter Squadron, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C.
